What concerns me is that lack of courage, determination, enthusiasm and mainly imagination to try as we used to, for picking up players from elsewhere like the lower leagues or indeed abroad. We certainly dont lack for courage and taking risks on potentially expensive older players, with injury worries or players with personal issues to deal with , from bringing back Barnard, Eastwood, Hunt, Cox, Ferdinand, and Fortune and so on. We dont seem to have an effective foursome combining well enough , ( Shaw, Brown , Martin and Browns mate) compared to other teams on the recruitment side. Scouting may well need something of a major review
Do we explore the rest of the UK at all/? Ireland, Scotland, Have we recently considered abroad at all. Port Vale are doing nicely thank you with their 14 new signings from abroad, many on a free.
If we did delve into the lower leagues why couldnt we be as successful as Peterborough ( even if only financially looking at their outcomes ) and many other teams who have done so this year, what if the success rate was say 50-50? What if it was even worse at 1 in 4? Say we brought in 8 at little cost over 2 years and 2 became real gems? How would that compare with the signings of Ibenfeldt, Coulthirst, Hunt, Cassidy, Cox, Weston, Straker, Kamara, Malarczyk, Bolger, King, Binnon Williams,Loza, Gomis, Reid, Cowan ,Bennett ( Julien ) to name just a few

Totally agree .

This club has been down the vet route far too many times for my liking ,it's utterly mad for us fans !

Look at Fortune, not played in 5 months and aged 35...I would be amazed if he was a success here espicially the way we set up.

Something doesn't add up IMO.

The problem with this thread, and others is everyone always uses examples to meet their own agenda, and dont look at the overall picture

  • We dont know what these older players cost us compared to younger players
  • We dont know what additional benefits these players bring to the club, and how important (or not) this can be
  • We have signed many a fit player in their mid twenties who has not made an impact - this seems to be ignored
  • Everything is always going to be a gamble , the club/manager have far more information on the subject and therefore see things differently.
  • If there was one 'right' way of recruiting everyne would be doing it

I hope he does really well and look forward to seeing him play

I'm no fan of this rather desperate throw of the dice, but I would actually say he suits the way we set up. Much more physical than Mooney so if we're going to lump it, I'd rather it was towards someone like Fortune.

I used to laugh watching Sloppy play .... he often set the ball on his left foot then literally take a step back so that he could take a bigger run up before hoofing it as far as he could. Good long throw though. I seem to remember once he was moved from left back to striker for the reserves and he scored a hatrick ....

I seem to recall that at one point we had two full backs - Brown and Sloppy - no wonder we were ****e in those days

Hopefully Fortune can do a good job for us. I wasn't trying to criticise his signing but point out that he is, at 35, a short term fix and we need an improved recruitment policy for the long term as well.

Absolutely - and the other issue for me has been that the short term loan market has allowed all clubs to put a sticky plaster over a problem. Now that the loan market has been slightly curtailed (although I did read that Chelsea had something like 30 players out on loan at the moment :omg:) I think a number of managers and clubs will have to think a lot more about their squad and cover for positions.

I think it is also worth pointing out that over the last few years players such as Payne, Moussa, O'Keefe, Bentley, Bridge, Kyppo and Smith have all come through the youth system to play for the team.

Blue was spot on about Hunt, he was a croc.... nearly all said its worth the gamble...Blue said look at the track record over the last 3/4 years.. he had played a few games and most as sub.

Blue was right again, Hunt cost this club 3 fit players wages... this club can't afford that, work out what he cost us per game!!!!

"Mrs" Blue, twice over. Mods, I ask if this is a sock puppet account or just a double persona? Seems decidedly dodgy to me.

Bearing in mind that is a list of seven players spanning ten years (since Moussa first joined) and Kyppo has only been with us for a year, it suggests we could do more. There have been a few others that went to bigger clubs without ever gracing our first team but, as welcome as those players are, its not enough over ten years.

Ricky Duncan and associates do a splendid job but, the foresight required for the recruitment style we need to employ, goes well beyond the remit of an academy set up.

My god this thread is depressing, we have just won 3 on the bounce at home and brought in a new striker that fits our style of play yet the comments on here make it seem like we've just been relegated out of the league.

let's look at things realistically, not every signing no matter where the player comes from is a success, that goes for every club at every level. you will get it wrong more often than you will get it right, even the best clubs in the world have reserve and youth teams full of players that aren't good enough to make it into the first team.

does the players age mean that they are not worth signing? well no Zlatan at utd is proving that as have many more before him. Is it worth gambling on a non-league talent, well yes but it will be just that a gamble, don't forget that many part time non league players are there for a reason, either they have left the professional game for some reason or their profession is more lucrative than lower league football with it's constant re-location would be.

The history is a poor indication of the future, so listing players who have / haven't made it over the years only really proves one thing, that you can make a list. But as the zone is fond of useless, often baseless theories last season fortune was at coventry they finished 8th in our league, since he left they are rooted to the bottom of the league, coincidence???

Without checking myself,

Last week on the dreadful final score, they stated Coventry had released virtually every player and fielded a youth team against Gillingham, their plight has nothing to do with Marc leaving IMO .

City are in peril because the stadium rent is mental and their only income is from ticket sales..FF anyone.

Gotta be worth a go. The guys career stats make him closer to Messi than Jason Williams being a pro footballer.

You may say that OBL but I couldn't possibly comment. He might just be having a quite weekend?

I have just returned from being away with dodgy wi-fi hampering my access to the forum.

I am thinking of going back there !

How can we spend so many pages of posts basically having a go each other and their opinions. We all see things differently but we seem to have a number of people who become personal and there is no need for that.

Debate is one thing but being open minded doesn't seem an option with many :'(

For the short period of time that Fortune was on the pitch today, he showed exactly what we have been missing from our front line. He won headers, shielded the ball expertly and bought others into the game, all in all a real handful for the Posh defence. It's early days yet but if he continues like that then Mooney might find himself warming the bench for a while.

I don't know, that Cox open goal was a shocker x
