The route we have taken with signing old worn out forwards on their last legs is IMO truly bizarre.

Look when we had Eastwood, yes he was a lazy so and so on the pitch, yet he could receive the ball drop his shoulder and bang the onion bag was bulging, excitement he offered which every fan lapped up,that is football.

We are served up old blokes who are blowing and looking disinterested ,it's embarrassing, these old vets never deliver but still demand decent salaries which most on here dream of.

Take Bilel playing park football and snapped up,they are about...just seems to me this club recieved the released list and just picked at random.

No matter how many times you type this it will never be true.

We are a club who's first priority is to survive. We will not be signing the next Freddy from non league (cost and wages) What we will be doing is looking for a Freddy from our academy. Bentley is the reason we are in L1 and who knows how much we will end up with when he leaves Brentford. Why don't you spend £10 this Tuesday and see if you can spot some talent on the pitch. Will be a chance to see for first time, some of the injured full squad players and some future talent.

Kipy was worth £10 alone against Brighton.

Phil Whelan from yesteryear, not a bad centre back and he was on £90,000 per year back then !Mike Marsh was on almost double that.

Forwards in virtually every team command the highest wage,do you really think the likes of Cox,Hunt ,Fortune and Ferdy have all signed for peanuts?...Even Phil admitted Fortune wanted big money, now either Fortune reduced his demands to what you think (£1000 pw)or they met somewhere in the middle which I believe is around £3,000 pw.

The thing is mrsblue that you don't have an inside track on what players at Southend earn, so why guess so high?

Im not guessing though RHB,

Hunt was on 4K whilst Cox is on 5k..2 different sources have told me those figures....even Rigsby stated he knew a conference south forward on 2k.

Im not saying the entire squad are on this type of money, just saying a few are,so I've been told.

Wrong and wrong of course. These 2different sources....They wouldn't by any chance be from the pseudonyms you use to post on here when your feeling bored.

Some non league gems are costly. Many are not and it depends at which stage you take the plunge. Conor Wood has gone from Soham to Leicester City. He is only 20 and cost zilch. Darren Foxley, released by Daggers academy, is now a prospect trialling with Bournemouth.

We could, organise regular training with and trial matches against, our under 21 squad and give hopefuls an opportunity and give ourselves a better way to track potential. We don't always have to part with money.

The non league has as many good players that need a chance as the league has poor players given too many chances.

You are missing my point, we are talking about goal scorers here that need to come and make an impact on our first team unlike Leicester who can afford to take a player and dump him in the U23s.

Sure we could take a chance on some youngsters for our U21's, but the discussion is about getting players in who can make an impact now.

If we just want a kid who might turn out good one day we already have players in our U21s and youths.

I heard numerous people tell me Eastwood was on 5k a year, total garbage of course, he was on under 2k.

Just because some players might be on big money in the conference doenst meant every player in the divisions above are on that or more, there are some clubs paying stupid money down there trying to get into the football league.

Wasnt you told Cox was on 8k at one point?

I think it's you that miss the point. Most of our under 21's will not play league football. We need to expand our opportunities to regularly see more potential in action. Leicester might dump a 20 year old in the under 23's but we would happily loan a player from Leicester's U23's so why not cut out the middle man? He or others would not be the first 20 year old to be in or around our first team. The club needs to think outside of the box on this.

Fred second time here was on 125k ...just over 2k per week mainly because of the dodgy knee problem so I was told ?

Cox was probably on that at Reading..international players ain't cheap you know.

Perhaps they should think about someone more useful inside the box.

Indeed. Will this signing be the catalyst to get Cox back in the team with two up front? Or will mooney be replaced as the lone man?
Coupled with the prospect of a third home win on the spin....looking forward to the game.

It would be the fourth......Brighton, Millwall and Oxford already.

He was on 1.7k per week.

Cox might have been on anything at Reading, we aint Reading though. He came here for first team football (oops) , he would have taken a pay cut.

This is about Fortune signing and it being suggested we should have looked in non league instead.

The point is we need players for our first team who can improve what we have. To get a decent chance of that happening from non league you have to pay money.

Yes we can take a chance on free players and maybe we should more, but thats not what we need right now.

Im not inspired by this signing, but If its a choice between him and a non league player with no record at all Id take him, for the short term.

I'm happy to provide the abuse ......... even though I can't think of a South American player at the moment except that Christian Juan San Salvador El Burro Hyslop did have some links to Latin America .............

I used to laugh watching Sloppy play .... he often set the ball on his left foot then literally take a step back so that he could take a bigger run up before hoofing it as far as he could. Good long throw though. I seem to remember once he was moved from left back to striker for the reserves and he scored a hatrick ....

It is what we need right now. The attitude that calls for instant fixes will never allow for long term success. The outcome of this season is a short term concern. When do we put things into place for the future? The answer is now. Yes we have present concerns but the long term health of the club is far more important than any single season. Our failure in the past to recruit correctly, with the future in mind, is precisely why we are where we are and not looking consistently sustainable.

Our under 23/21 has done well but let's not get carried away. There is a lot of scope for improvement in recruitment and it will be a major factor in our future success or failure. We are currently looking up the pyramid to kids, crocks and the aged and with very limited success. There are other avenues to explore.

Like I said, Fortune is what we needed for the next 4 months, if anyone been to Sheffield Utd this season, know what Cox can do in a 4-4-2 formation, with Ranger up front, I think Fortune is suited with Cox.

What concerns me is that lack of courage, determination, enthusiasm and mainly imagination to try as we used to, for picking up players from elsewhere like the lower leagues or indeed abroad. We certainly dont lack for courage and taking risks on potentially expensive older players, with injury worries or players with personal issues to deal with , from bringing back Barnard, Eastwood, Hunt, Cox, Ferdinand, and Fortune and so on. We dont seem to have an effective foursome combining well enough , ( Shaw, Brown , Martin and Browns mate) compared to other teams on the recruitment side. Scouting may well need something of a major review
Do we explore the rest of the UK at all/? Ireland, Scotland, Have we recently considered abroad at all. Port Vale are doing nicely thank you with their 14 new signings from abroad, many on a free.
If we did delve into the lower leagues why couldnt we be as successful as Peterborough ( even if only financially looking at their outcomes ) and many other teams who have done so this year, what if the success rate was say 50-50? What if it was even worse at 1 in 4? Say we brought in 8 at little cost over 2 years and 2 became real gems? How would that compare with the signings of Ibenfeldt, Coulthirst, Hunt, Cassidy, Cox, Weston, Straker, Kamara, Malarczyk, Bolger, King, Binnon Williams,Loza, Gomis, Reid, Cowan ,Bennett ( Julien ) to name just a few
