Films you've watched recently.

The Red Shoes
Powell & Pressburger's classic take on the Hans Christian Anderson fairytale from 1948. Me and the missus are off to Sadler's Wells to see the new production later this week so we thought we'd better see the film first. Loved it, particularly the overall look (especially during the section where the company performs The Red Shoes) which is every bit as stunning as the other Archers films I've seen. 9/10.

Visually a masterpiece. As most of Michael Powell's film were.

Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them. I've never watched any Harry Potter films, but over Xmas I saw a few on tv and they were... ok. Mrs Drastic wanted to go to this, and I was pleasantly surprised, much more enjoyable than the ones I'd watched over Xmas. 8/10

Miles Ahead. Miles Davis biopic, partly crowd funded by Don Cheadle. Reasonable but I would have preferred a more straight forward bio. 6.5/10

Personally, I liked the Miles film.Though it was an unconventional biopic.Nothing wrong with that though.

Warsaw 44. One of the most powerful and harrowing films I have ever seen. A must watch but not with children present.

Ernest and Elsie - The story of Raymond Briggs' parents. Nothing groundbreaking happens but it's tender and touching, especially if you have parents of a similar age. 9/10

The Girl on the Train
- It was ok...if you don't look at it too closely, but that comes from the source material. 6/10

On a bit of a John Schlesinger kick atm.

Re-viewed Sunday Bloody Sunday the other night. Can't say I liked it all that much when it first came out (in 71), though the final scene where Peter Finch talks directly to the camera remains one of the best moments in modern film history.

Queen of Katwe - The true story of Phiona Mutesi, chess prodigy from the slums of Kampala, Uganda. Sounds a little bit dry, but it really is a wonderful film. 9/10

Certainly the best film of the year for me, although I haven't seen Manchester by the Sea yet.

That hasn't opened here yet but is also on my to see list.Bit early to talk about films of the year but I really liked the Jeff Bridges Oscar nominated film Hell or High water.

Best British film though had to be Ken Loach's I,Daniel Blake.

Still on my John Schlensinger kick, saw Midnight Cowboy and A kind of Loving again yesterday.

While JS will undoubtedly be remembered for MC I happen to think his first British film is his best.
