FA Cup draws

1968-1969 is when we set a record. We're the only team in FA Cup history to have 2 players both score hatricks in consecutive rounds.
In those two cup matches Southend United fielded the same team in both games. In the Brentwood Town match Billy Best scored the quickest hat-trick in F.A,Cup history from the 1st. round proper scoring his final 3 goals in 87, 88 & 89 minutes, this was confirmed in the F.A. Cup Final programme a couple of seasons ago. Also Billy's five goals in the same match were scored in the final 18 minutes that day this feat also being the quickest consectutive five goal's in the competition's history. In the next round we were drawn to play away against Swindon Town at the County Ground in what turned out to be another incredible match played on what could only be described as a ploughed field with another goal from Billy Best and our second from the late Ian"Chico"Hamilton. In this match Sammy McMillan failed a late fitness test and was replaced by Mel Slack who played brilliantly, it was to be Mel's only appearance that season apart from a couple as substitute earlier in the season. This also turned out to be Mel's final first team appearance before leaving the club in the summer of '69, signing for Cambridge United who then gained election into the Football League the following year replacing Bradford Park Avenue.
