Breaking News F.A Cup 1st Round draw. Southend United vs Charlton Athletic

@Yorkshire Blue the comparisons are not a competition; Garry is a Southend native, schoolboy into 1st team, and we were his first club; before he got sold.

Imo writing a pair of good selling books is a tad more media savvy than a few corny lines hammed up on Ted Lasso.

Both are worthy "famous" sons of both clubs; but you may rank them as you wish, if that floats your boat but for it is a bit of comparing apples and oranges.

Plus his dad was local ref. Many on here would have played Sunday games reffed by Nelson senior. No doubts Wivs will have been booked by him......After all he has been booked by every other ref in Essex.

When are people going to get over this ‘we are a big club’ mentality? We WERE a bigger club than most in the National League but there are at least 10 fixtures I could select that would be more enticing from a soccer neutral point of view.

Northampton Kettering is anyone really surprised at that selection.

This big club mentality needs to go. We are a National League club with debts and a set of backers that want to turn that around.

WAKE UP, SMELL THE COFFEE and be thankful that we have a club at all.

It really does depend how you view a "big club"

If its league history then we have spent a vast amount of our history above almost all in this division, reaching league 1 or championship is something that some clubs in this division will never do, let alone football league.

If its Cup history or titles then it's pretty much the same as above. How many have made finals in LDV, QTR finals of league Cup, won football league titles.

Wembley appearances same

Crowd size we are currently the best supported, despite going through hell and currently sitting just outside the drop.

What constitutes a big club.

It's OK to say we are a big club at this level because we are.

Does that mean success? No

Northampton v Kettering… why this over us v Charlton?

Nile Ranger influence! 😂

A well supported club with less income than others in the division. Smaller wage budget than others and still wobbling having just got of the canvas after a count of 9. We lost ground on our rivals in the summer, so have smaller squad. Then lost vital players in the first few weeks for various reasons. Others aren't hitting the form they had last season

Thats why we are currently 17 because history and average attendances dose not win you games. Those are the reasons the BBC haven't chosen us because they expect a comfortable 2-0 for Charlton with our ground emptying out on 80mins. They want grandstand finish with the 'little' club either launching the ball in from all angles to get something or bodies on the line defending a slender lead in injury time.

If anyones honest they wont expect to see that v Charlton. Of course I will be delighted if I do.

Apologies, I took your use of “bigger link” to be a comparison. It wasn’t intended as a knock on Nelson; I merely didn’t want Chris Powell’s contributions forgotten.

That's a valid point - sometimes many of us get sucked into the "who is better or best" mentality when it is possible to say that a good many players were good professionals & are a key part of the history of our club.

That's the one.
If I remember correctly we had a handful of hit the woodwork/goal disallowed/shots cleared off the line/penalty shouts/near misses etc and they didn’t bother showing any of those but they showed every Charlton cross that sailed harmlessly out for a goal kick. I have never seen such dishonest highlights. Charlton barely entered our half but you wouldn’t know it from the highlights. God it must have pained them to show the goals.

I will endure them later to see Thommo make it 3-0 by chasing the ball down when we were still celebrating our second goal 😍
