Post-Match Thread and Ratings Exeter City 1-0 Southend United

Just seen the highlights, Mildys positioning was poor, decent strike from there bloke though.

Think the ref got both red cards spot on.

No, I wasn't as you well know! What I'm saying is that compared to what they've been playing in this season, a very concentrated vocal terraced end IS a bit intimidating and when you consider the age of some of our players it might have been an issue.

NO WAY!!!! They only made some noise when we were 4 minutes into time added on in the 2nd half. They made Col Ewe & Borient seem like the noisiest thing the planet!!

Was Jabo trying to show his dancefloor moves with the attempted punch & kick? He is an idot, & so is Tilly if he tries to defend Jabo! We saw this ref make an odd decision when Geoge friend was assaulted at Brighton, so it came as no surprise, even if he was looking for either decision!!

Incidentally, no-one else has mentioned it but we had a stonewall handball penalty appeal turned down in the last 20 minutes, bang in front of the ref and us.

Thought it was handball at the time, definitely hit the arm and it was away from his body but it was probably ball to hand.

I thought it was ball to hand and a penalty would have been harsh, though I've seen many like that given, but a couple of Exeter supporting mates reckoned it was a nailed on hand ball and they were lucky to escape the penalty

Thats it though, could have gone either way!

Jabo hasn't made a good impression over the last month he's been here. hasn't scored a goal. i must admitt he's got good feet, but just hasn't done enough to take the chances. i would say his best performance was against norwich and i wouldn't say that good.
SOUTHEND UNITED TILL I DIE!

Game ****, pies great, exeter a great night out. Fans 10 out or 10 for going all that way a week before xmas, team ratings, everyone 2 for being in the same colour kit.

A few minutes later Ibehre went, not much question although I'm not convinced either the ref or lino saw it but just went on the crowd's reaction.

No, the ref and linesman definitely didn't see it. The ref heard the crowd, saw their player on the ground and then had to run over to the fourth official to find out what had happened. Only after speaking to him did he dish out the red card.

Here's one what I done earlier ...

Where is Shrimpero? Rob..........what do you have to say for yourself???!

Shrimpero checking in ... sorry Kay, but this little effort from the 'On The Road Again' thread wll have to suffice:-

"Beware the Jabowobbly, my Tilson" ... are possibly not the words Paul Ince used when counselling Tilly about the assets of Jabo Ibehre prior to loaning him to the mighty Shrimpers. This was the second time I've seen him and I really don't see what more he brings to the table than Alex Revell. Still, I'm sure he could have been all showered and ready to rustle up a post-match snack for the lads prior to the long trip home.

I was really looking forward to this one. The easiest trip of the season from my exile in the Celtic enclave and the hope of seeing a rejuvenated side following the Hartlepool comeback added a little spring in my step down the hill to Penzance station. Unfortunately, the years of expecting too much from our team should have prepared me better for what ensued. We never looked like scoring. Even when Jabo was presented with two gilt-edged heading opportunities, we just seemed to lack conviction. We had little of the ruthless determination that is required to dominate a game. The enigma that is Francis Laurent seems to typify this - he is great to watch but incredibly frustrating too, his final ball always seeming to go nowhere near our central strikers. I feel that he may actually be too nice a guy to really do it in football. There are few people more skilled at bamboozling defenders at this level but he seems to lack that streak of ruthlessness and that bit of malicious devilment that separates the assassins from the also-rans.

On the plus side, we did not give up. It was good to see Franno getting forward but just a shame there was only one of his well-decent crosses. I thought Granty was a diamond, doing lots of unsung work tidying up for others' mistakes. He rarely wastes the ball either and it was a very shrewd piece of business to tie him to a longer contract earlier this season as the guy is a sound footballer, despite last week's dithering which led to Hartlepool's first goal. The skipper did well too and held that defence together at times. Too much holding of Exeter's forwards for my liking, but that's another story. And fair play too to the two hundred and ninety-four away fans who braved the weather. You can relax a bit for the next two months as I'll be off the road for the duration, so here's hoping my absence will help. We certainly need at least a share of the points from Brisbane Road next week as we're sailing a bit too close to that zone. I'll be happier too that Jabo won't be playing as - apologies to Harry Redknapp - even Mrs S would have put one of those headers away.

Well, that's it from me for a while and here's wishing you all a Merry Christmas, especially on Boxing Day.

ps Good to see you and the Mrs. there, Brettie (Angell) - got a better view near the food outlet, so hung out there in the hope of changing our luck. Also, was good to be near the bovril too. And what about the Domino's Pizza ? How good was that at a footy game ?!

Not had time to read the whole of this thread, so apologies if this repeats other people.

Having been at the game, and not seen us for a little while, I was somewhat concerned to note that:
- We had perfectly good players of our own left out on the bench
- Loanees looked distinctly average (Malone) or down right crap (Morrison) - more on Ibehre in a minute
- Passing and first touch is currently light years away from the smooth, controlled, flowing football with which we won this league only a few years ago. By the time we've got the ball under control we've got a player on us, forcing a rushed, hurried and normally very errant pass. No wonder we can't break teams down very well, even one that gives the ball back as much as Exeter do.
- Ibehre strikes me as utterly unprofessional. If someone stamps on your foot off the ball, you want to try to drawe attention to it, but you don't do that by committing a red card offense yourself, not least when you're a man up at the time. That incident alone is enough in my view to not bother with getting him back for a second loan period, but add to that the two gilt-edged chances that my Grandma could have scored in the first half and I have to wonder what we get out of loaning this lump of **** from MK Dons.

Ibehre made the difference in the game for me - between feeling that it was money well spent to see us try hard in a game we genuinely could have won, and money utterly wasted by unprofessionalism and ineptitude on the pitch.

Apologies to those in the front seats across whom I vented my feelings at that prat as he trudged off managing to look genuinely surprised he got a red card.

Strictly Come Dancing on the telly is enough to drive anyone to the internet on Christmas Day...

Ron Martin had walked across the pitch at half time to a chorus of boos, the travelling fans made their feelings clear.

To the other 263 people that made the journey, well done guys, we did ok, good to see fellow Egghead Southampton and Teeside Paul, again,

Good to see you again, Kay. I missed the Ron Martin half-time walk and booing though possibly I had fallen asleep after the first half display on the pitch.

Regarding the game...we were poor on the day and are in the middle of a bad run but I think it's a bit early for the doom and gloom tone of some of the other posts on this thread. We do seem to go round and round in the same circles on here...

early 7/8 season - couple of early defeats - we're doomed!
mid 7/8 season - bad run around christmas time - we're doomed
7/8 final position 6th

early 8/9 - couple of early defeats - we're doomed!
mid 8/9 season - bad run around christmas time - we're doomed!
8/9 final position 8th

pre 9/10 season - we're doomed!
mid 9/10 season - bad run around christmas time - we're doomed!

is there a pattern here?
whingerzone or shrimperzone?

bah! humbug! and a happy christmas to everyone!
