Post-Match Thread and Ratings Exeter City 1-0 Southend United

Yep we have played most of the bottom half away so far. Makes that away record look even worse. Still have the likes of Leeds, Soton, Norwich, MK dons and Col U to play away next year.

Don't be so glum CB, think about it, we'll get rid of that useless ****er Barnard in Jan, and FINALLY, the world will feel the full force of the Freedman/Walker partnership. I'm tellin ya, the so-called big team in this league won't know what's hit them when they line up against those two.

Where you getting this from? What sauce you using?

I was told this by someone who spoke to a close friend of his [S.Cox]. He's currently on loan at Histon. He's a Defender/Midfielder according to Wiki. So if he does join, you know who to thank :P

To be honest getting sick of these loan signings. Nearly 4 years since we signed a permanent left back, nearly 3 years since we signed a permanent centre back. In that time we mustve gone through 10 strikers, many of whom have gone on to be the top scorers at their next clubs. That is not good.

I beat you'd change your tune if we got players such as Dervite, Stanislas, Mulgrew, Sawyer (the one from last season) and Robinson. We simply CAN NOT afford to spend hundreds of thousands in the transfer market and it amazes me how people can not see this!

Well those 4 came from premier teams, as have O Donovan, Friend, Malone and Mvoto. Presumably they didnt cost much more, but they were much worse players. Ok jury out on Mvoto but hes no Dervitte. We have been able to attract premier loanees, just crap ones!

There have been any players who we have had on loan that came from championship clubs, Mulgrew came from Wolves (who were in the Championship at the time), Federici and Robson-Kanu came from Reading, Harding came from Ipswich and Robinson came from Watford. We have good links with premiership teams and we need to use these when we have no money at our disposal.

Morrison came from Swindon aswell.

If you ask me Tilson and co should be on the phone to Chelsea, Arsenal , Tottenham and West Ham and ask if they have any players they'd be willing to send. Heck, maybe even call on players from further afield such as Bristol City or Swansea. Think we should use our link with St.Pauli as well. But whatever the management do, i have full faith in them.

It could be argued then that our best loanees have come from non-premier teams. Morrison being a case in hand, and in the past the likes of Sodje and Mccormack from outside the prem. In fact you could argue that nearly all of Tillys best signings have come from the lower reaches of the division and that money doesnt necessarily buy you quality. There must be another Freddy or Bailey we can pluck from the lower leagues.

You've hit the nail on the head! We need some scouts looking at lower leagued teams but that could cost and I'm sure that there are many other teams who are doing the same thing.

That's 13 points in the bag then :) we always play better against the top teams (and Col Ewe)

Jobless missed a golden chance last Saturday and judging by todays commentary missed two more that even Chris Phillips could have put away, then I think he might aswell sod off. Hes been more help to MK Dons than he has to us. We have enough "spare" forwards who cant score so we dont really need to waste our money on another.

And with the advantage of the extra man this muppet gets himself sent off. Thanks Jobless but we will let you know.....sod off.

Not only can he not finish but he is basically employed as a lump up front which isn't needed. Sure Barnard isnt a hold up player but he does a good job of dropping deep and getting physically involved, so someone like Ibhere isnt needed. Judging by recent results away from home its creativity thats lacking, not muscle

Agreed. We need a creative midfielder who can receive the ball from Grant/Christophe and make a defense-splitting pass that creates a chance for Barnard (can't really rely on any of our other strikers).

Outside of the transfer window - which most of the loanees have been - it's not as if we've got much option.

I do however agree that we've signed far too many forwards without addressing our defensive short-comings.

I also think if we addressed our creative short-comings, our strikers would look a lot better as well and we wouldn't have to have frittered so much away on trying to sign more strikers. A central midfield of Christophe and McCormack is absolutely killing our passing game. Grant is admittedly not quite as bad as JFC, but that's still an ugly midfield. We retain possession OK, but we move the ball about so slowly and with such little precision or vision that it is difficult to break down a defence as by the time Moussa or Laurent (actually, let's face it, its just as likely to be Morrison or Barrett) have retrieved a Macca or JFC pass the opposition have had plenty of time to reorganise and regroup. We need to get someone in central midfield who can zip a pass, that doesn't telegraph his switches of direction and can pass accurately into the path of the wide players rather than the hit and hope method used by our current central midfielders. Then we'll be able to stretch teams and create a few more chances.

Didn't go myself but have a friend who is an Exeter season ticket holder. Here is her view:

Well, here goes: we played badly but took our goal very well. You also played pretty badly but didn't really trouble our keeper. Full of incidents - 2 red cards (you should have had another one when your guy tripped Stansfield when he was through on goal!!). You were a bit "physical", we were a bit pathetic - all in all very entertaining! Referee was appalling and I think he wanted you to score reaaalllly badly but you just didn't oblige! Probably a fair result but maybe 0-0 would have also been fair.
I had my work Christmas party last night in the hotel where Southend were staying and was tempted to try and sabotage them (I didn't!) but did talk to your number 7 and 10 for a little while - think I freaked them out about the state of the SJP dressing rooms and they were complaining it was too cold for them. Maybe that was a factor...
