Sad to say that I'm of an age that when I saw this thread I immediately thought of Tony Bentley...however, I agree that the keeper deserves to play at a higher level - and good luck to him if he achieves that. I wouldn't see him stepping straight into the side at Goodison and agree with the poster above that a championship club might be a better move for his progression, if not his pocket.

Look at it this way, if you saw Tony Bentley in action, consider yourself lucky that you can still remember that you did.:smiles:

I think Norwich could be a decent move for all parties concerned.

Not sure why that would be better, don't they have a decent couple of keepers at the moment?

If he goes to any of the teams mentioned, he'll likely be loaned out (he's not good enough to be any of those teams No.1), so therefore they will all provide the same opportunity won't they?

What sort of money we talking about regarding compensation

Really difficult to say.

Tribunals tend to favour the buying club than the selling club. Age etc can come into it, but if a club offers X amount outside the tribunal im sure it can be accepted. So if say 5 clubs were interested a bidding war could still take place and be beneficial. If only one comes in and it goes to a panel descision then i would say that a fee of between 300k -800k would be about right.

I really don't get this 'they are too bigger club for him'. If a Premiership club shows interest in a player then they think he is good enough, or will be, under their guidance. I don't believe that Bentley could walk into a Prem defence and become number 1, but that is a lot different from saying they are too bigger club. As this is only newspaper gossip it's probably immaterial for the moment anyway.

I as referring to Martinez, not Bentley. Martinez is well out of his depth

surely he'd want to go somewhere he stands a chance of playing. like QPR last summer for instance. or would a pay day at Everton with little chance of a game unless he improves massively suit him better?

re tribunals, is the fee always published- or is it the same as a normal sale when the fee can be 'undisclosed'

everyone seems to have an opinion of what we will get for bentley, but I wondered if we are likely to find out?

If the clubs can settle beforehand it can be 'undisclosed' but AFAIK if it goes all the way to the hearing the fee is published. I believe it's quite rare to go that far and can take a very long time. It's difficult to have an idea of exactly what we'll get till the Ings decision is finalised but I would say anywhere up to £1m or so as a wild guess.

I know that if I were the club official undertaking the purchase I would be looking to pay a smaller initial fee and push for higher payments when certain milestones are reached or for resale of the player. There is less initial risk/outlay and then see how the player develops.

Did I read somewhere that Barnsley will get 25% of the sell on fee for John Stones. A tidy sum as he's valued at £30m

No chance of it being that high, not at a tribunal for an out-of-contract player. More likely around £400-500k initial payment now.

Yes however Barnsley were smart enough to negotiate their own sell-on, which is exactly why we should have snapped QPR's hands-off in the summer. We won't be able to do that now and therefore we'll only likely get around 10% of any future sale as decided by tribunal. Big mistake not allowing Bentley to join QPR for such a good deal.
