European Athletics Championships

Although there have already been some success stories for GB in these Euros and there will surely be more, our lack of competitors in some events is disappointing. No-one in the women's high hurdles or the decathlon (if only Dean Macey wasn't made of glass!). We also only had one woman in the 100m and she didn't even make the final.

Furthermore, why, with the exception of the javelin over the years (Whitbread, Anderson, Backley, Hill) have we always been so **** poor in the throwing events?

Dean Macey is currently on Celebrity Masterchef, I think he tore an abductor getting a salad out of the fridge. There's a girl who recently dominated at the World Junior Champs at 100 & 200m so hopefully she may be a prospect for 2012 and beyond.

GB have never really excelled at throwing events, you have to go back to Geoff Capes before the javelin men and women had a run of success. I can't remember anyone at Olympic or European standard before Capes, although we'd invariably win a few medals at Commonwealth level.

Yeah, good old Judy Oakes was always battling for a Commonwealth gold, showing those Ugandans and Malaysians how it's done.

Going back further than that there was husband and wife pair of Howard & Rosemary Payne, Howard was a bespectacled hammer thrower and I believe Mrs P was an exponent of the discuss. Both won Commonwealth Gold in their time IIRC.

Great start for Ennis, already 63 points clear.

Jess wins the high jump and takes a 134 point lead in to this evening. Dobrynska is in second and may make some ground up in the shot, but Jess should cook her in the 200m.

Really gutted for Will, that DQ rule is very harsh, and he's right that if Bolt was to false start (which he often does!) then that rule will be scrapped very soon after!

Really pleased Turner won though, and he ******* that annoying bear mascot too which was great!
