Gave up after 90 minutes, and didn't know the result until this morning. I've got Spain in our sweep stake at work so I'm not unhappy they are through as I'm guaranteed 2nd place at least.

That might well be all they're capable of.While the tiki taka is still there in flashes the team as a whole has clearly lost its cutting edge upfront. We'll get a better idea of what sort of threat Germany might pose after tonight's game.

Just didn't understand the logic of not bringing Torres on, but so glad to see two of the biggest ********s in football (Ronaldo and Nani) beaten.

Anyone know if Nani had allowed Bruno Alves to continue with taking the 3rd pen, would it have made any difference? I mean, would the ref have allowed it? For me, this was the decisive moment at Alves never looked likely to score his after that, so I'm doubly glad that Nani was partly, at least, culpable!

I believe Alves would have been pencilled in to go 4th, but he miscounted his turn and started to walk up to take the third penalty - certainly a sign of being nervous!

Spain clearly missing Villa up front. Ronaldo what a nob, as captain shouldve taken one of the first penalties, not try and grab the glory by converting the 5th. Happy to see him looking miserable at the end. Had a shocking game. Hope tonights match is better.

As opposed to Spain, who have a plethora of bellends within their ranks such as Fabregas, Torres and Ramos, and that's without mentioning the utterly detestable Busquets.

Portugal had the beating of Spain last night but couldn't capitalise on the chances they created, courtesy of Ronaldo's selfishness and profligacy. In the first half they were essentially deploying a full-court press, and that not only pushed Spain back into their own half, but unsettled the likes of Pique, Busquets and Alonso who usually trigger their passing game. I lost count the number of times in the first 45 minutes that Pique was caught on the ball. Spain weathered the storm though, and Portugal couldn't maintain that pressure. As soon as Portugal tired, Spain began to exert some authority on proceedings. When Portugal countered in the dying minutes of the game, if Meireles had played the ball into Ronaldo's running stride then it's game over... but he didn't, so it wasn't.

That said, I haven't been impressed with Spain at all this tournament. I don't buy the assertion that they're "boring", but they've certainly lost the swagger and panache that won them the tournament in 2008. They're now a far more functional side, which is probably owing to the evolution of the tactic under Guardiola's tutelage at Barcelona. They don't have to swarm forward in numbers because of Messi's brilliance, and Spain have looked blunt without a driving forward. I fancy Germany to have too much for them.

Do you normally judge international footballers on the basis of their lifestyle, personality, etc rather than their playing ability?
Incidentally,(and far be it from me to defend a Barça player)but what's Busquets done to rattle your cage?

Not particularly, I was merely responding to OBL's remarks about Ronaldo and Nani, the latter having produced a fantastic display and an emphatic penalty last night.

And my feelings relating to Busquets are probably best portrayed with this -

I was rooting for Portugal all game. Gutted to lose on pens. Spain looked ordinary. If they get Germany they will lose. If they play Italy, prepare for more pens!

Nani is a diving, cheating **** and he showed it last night within the first 15 minutes or so! Fair enough what you say about Busquets but don't tell me Nani is in any way morally better!

I just cannot believe what I am reading about Ronaldo, shocking game, profligate and various expletives etc. Quite incredible that one of the best and most dedicated players of all time is criticised so much and probably says more about the people who do it rather than him. Last night it was pretty evident to see that he was a constant threat, Spain had to double up on him and foul him on many occasions to stop him and he passed the ball well on many occasions. His one crime was to have the temerity to miss one chance, even the greats can’t score in every game but it is fair to say he has done more than most to get Portugal to an inch of the final.
However the issue that amazed me the most was the furore over taking the 5[SUP]th[/SUP] penalty, what absolute nonsense. What, the 5[SUP]th[/SUP] penalty isn’t important now? In fact it could have been the defining penalty, no one has the benefit of hindsight. If Alves had taken the 5[SUP]th[/SUP] penalty and missed then the result would have been the same. Also it is so hypocritical to criticise Ronaldo and then not Fabregas, was he not arrogant for wanting the glory of taking the match winning penalty? No, didn’t think so. Also I don’t remember Gerrard being criticised for being up last in 2005 champions league final, it didn’t come to him because they won before he was required. So it is just a non- existent reason put up just because the result went the wrong way for Portugal.

Get out of Ronaldo's bottom.

About every single player in the game last night could be classed as a diver and, possibly, a cheat. Is this more to do with Nani playing for Man United than anything else?

Also, Nani surely you can't say be morally worse than someone who racially abuses someone because he makes a meal out of tackles.
