Essex Cricket 2024

Porter’s England chances aren’t the only thing gone.

Head coach Anthony McGrath is returning to Yorkshire.

I’ve heard Chris Silverwood touted as potentially returning but I’m not sure we can afford him.

Aaron Beard is retiring.

Rumours that several others will be on their way.

Ben Allison moving to Worcestershire as well.

Re the coach, what chances Tendo returning?

Minimal I’d have thought. He’s the assistant coach for the Indian national team and Essex are hard up.

Do you know any names?

I imagine Rossington is one, Khushi another. I expected Browne to go but he has a testimonial year in 2025.

County cricket in a tricky place right now. Lots of mid 20s cricketers have retired this week across the circuit. With money tightening in the county game, and cost of living continuing to go up, it's no surprise to see the depth fall out clubs. Even lower paying jobs likely pay more than being a back-up player at Essex, especially if players can then get paid to play club cricket at weekends.

It was mainstays of the side rather than fringe players but I don’t know where this rumour originated from to know how accurate it is.

Should see some new faces next year then with B. Allison and Beard both off, unless they think Jamal Richards is ready to step in if required. The first choice bowling line up of Cook, Porter, Harmer, Critchley, Snater and potentially Walter, Benkenstein and Westley is pretty decent - as long as none of them get injured. I guess it comes down to how big a squad they can carry for the whole season and whether they can do what they did with the wicketkeeper (and others in previous years) for the 50 over competition and just call up someone in form from league cricket.
