England v West Indies 1st Test

Couple of very good knocks, although Ravi succombs on 108 after he got clean bowled. Cook 120 odd not out and his highest score is 139 and is yet to hit a double-century, so im sure thats the aim for tomorrow!

Kev

Cook hasn't even threatened 150 let alone 200. What on earth was Edwards doing? He only seemed interested in bouncing Anderson near the close of play, when seemingly he couldn't be arsed to do the same against Strauss, Cook & Bopara.

Well played Ravi 3 consecutive test match 100's is good in anyone's book. I'd love to see him take a 4th off the convicts in Cardiff in July.

i'm disgraced that the english cricket team start the ashes in wales. it's just wrong!

The ECB is the English and Welsh Cricket Board.

It is obviously only a coincidence that the chairman at the time the decision was made, was David Morgan, who as the name betrays is Welsh, and Hugh Morris, who remains as Chief Executive, despite completely ****ing over England's best player.

Cardiff is an integral part of the ECB's plan to avoid what happened last time we played the Ashes: namely a whitewash. With the Welsh weather we'll have to play incredibly badly to lose. Don't put it past England though.

...and as England haven't beaten the convicts at Lords since the 30's, it's unlikely we'll be going into the 3rd test with a series lead.

England scoring at a good rate this morning to make up for the loss of yesterday. Cook reaches his first test 150, and KP is looking to dominate.

What is it with Fidel Edwards seems to want to scone Jimmy Anderson, bowls him, sends him on his way with a flow of invective, and then bowls like a pussy cat to Cook & KP?

Good to see Bresnan take a couple of wickets this morning - hasn't had a lot of chance in his two Tests so far. Well done the young sub fielder Borthwick taking two catches today as well.

West Indies must be one of the poorest Test sides to visit this country in living memory.

I dunno, Zimbabwe in 2003, when the menance of Mark Butcher and Anthony McGrath took a bundle of wickets, and Bangladesh in 2005 were pretty woeful...but the fact W.Indies are now even considered in such company is a great shame. Im too young to remember the era of great W.Indies dominance, but throughout the 90's there were some really good close battles and they were worthy of 5/6 match series...

I think you only have to go back a year to find a worse side: New Zealand. That said, this WIndies team doesn't look as if it wants to be here and are poor. Its disturbing to think that England lost to them.

I wouldn't hold this morning too much against them. Simmons played a poor shot to get out, but the ball was hooping about and Anderson was near unplayable. Even Chanderpaul was playing and missing against him. It's well worth catching the highlights to see Anderson clean up Benn and Taylor: Jimmy was swinging it at 89mph hitting the top of off-stump and sending it cart-wheeling to both the left and right hander. Beautiful stuff.

Just about to say the same thing, the WIndies are also short changing both their & England fans by going through the motions. A major fault lies here with the ECB trying to shoe horn 7 test matches into an Ashes summer, which will also see the 20/20 World Cup, plus a plethora of ODI's.

From the England perspective there have been a few plus points, notably the batting of Ravi Bopara, it doesn't matter who the opposition is, 3 consecutive test 100's is a bloody good achievement. I've been impressed with Onions, plus Anderson & Broad are starting to prove a good pair of opening bowlers, and as Nasser would put it Broad is becoming a go to bowler.

The downside from the England viewpoint is going into the Ashes they could have done with competitive cricket rather than what the WIndies have dished up.

To be fair to them, they were late(ish) subs for Sri Lanka, who were originally scheduled to be playing this series. However, the Sri lankan players (and I know they're not alone here) much preferred a month of IPL dollars.
