England V Brazil

In spite of the fact we saw very little of the ball, I thought it was the most enjoyable England "friendly" I had sat through since that one we nicked a 3-2 win over the Argies.

I never get the criticism of Walcott. People say that he's got no end product which is a ridiculous criticism of him. All he has got is end product. The last two seasons he's managed a huge number of goals and assists despite being technically pretty limited. His pace is sensational and he uses it to great effect. On Sunday his touch let him down and when that happens he looks poor but even then he looked our most dangerous player going forward.

Even when he's playing poorly he will get a couple of chances every single game and he can create those chances himself which considering the lack of creativity in the side makes him essential.

His touch was poor, he missed a one-on-one because he didn't pick a side, and he didn't run at his man enough (when he did he beat him with ease).

I do like him in general though.

On the evidence of Saturday night I'd disagree. There were times when I was screaming at the TV (and then I turned over to the football :hilarious:) because he should have passed, or been more positive. That said I quite like him in general...

Can someone also explain to me why Hart insisted on kicking the ball out almost every time he had the ball? I understand that he was trying to find a man on the wings, but if his kicking was that poor surely he should have just given up and tried something else?

Brazil were pushing very high up on England, so a throw would've put unnecessary pressure on whoever received it. Hart's distribution has always been inconsistent at best... compare his to someone like De Gea's. They're poles apart.

He needs to practice, because if we want to keep possession every player needs to be involved. Almost every time he had a goal kick it seemed to lead to a Brazil throw. It was also very frustrating to watch.

I guess it is also important to point out that, other than his distribution, Hart had a fantastic game.

If Hart was aiming for the corners (at least I think he was) then he should have aimed down the middle. His kicking is that poor. Most seemed to clear the advertising hoardings and find the crowd.

People criticising Gerrard should check the assists for our goals in last years Euro's....

That's a bit like saying Geoff Hurst was better than Rooney at WC 1966. You can't really make comparisons across time and between one player who played and one who didn't. Roy has to pick the best 11, I don't think Gerrard would be in it for me, and our team would probably be better at maintaining possession without him. Whether we'd get more or less assists with Gerrard in/out of the team is a factor of how much possession we have, and how we use that possession. Gerrard is a high risk/high reward player... sadly we've had lots of those players over the years and it's not got us a major prize... perhaps we need to look at more low risk options and develop our game differently.

I've googled it and came up with the qualifiers instead.

Ashley Young was England's most prolific assister and Rooney was second. No Gerrard on the list.

I'm a bit dubious of assists as an individual stat as I think we've lead the division in it the last two years with two different players, both of whom were our set-piece takers. It makes me think it says more about how good a team is at set pieces.

I know it was Gerrard's ball for Carroll's fabulous header, but I'm struggling to recall our other goals - Welbeck got that back-heel v Sweden, but what were the other goals?

He got an assist against France as well, Lescott with the goal. That's about it weren't it?

I'm no Gerrard fan but he was very good in the Euros last summer until he and Parker ran themselves out and we had nothing in reserve against Italy to help them out. I think he's finally become a bit more clever as a player now he has got older and was very good in the second half of the season for Liverpool. I'd have Lampard ahead of him, but that's always been the case.

I think Gerrard got three assists in the Euros but can't remember the third one so maybe it was only two.

Anyone else see what is wrong with that? That's why I rarely use wikipedia :winking:

I really really do not get the criticism of Stevie G, baffles me, never gives less than 100%, he really does not try a hollywood pass all of the time, can pass teams to death (seen it plenty of times) good set piece taker, good captain due to carrying an entire football club for over the last decade (bit of help from suarez of late) Our best player in the last two tournaments, can score goals, assists a fair few too, my issue has been the problem of the team around him, poor movement off the ball coupled with the wrong midfield partners means Gerrard is often trying too hard IMO. I am a massive fan of his in every way, brilliant midfielder simply brilliant.

He's also one of the very few England players who is obviously passionate about playing for his country.
