England tour of the West Indies

Play abandoned for the day :stunned:

I thought this kind of incompetence only existed in the UK.

:madman:

The only other abandoned test I can think of was also in the West Indies, at Sabina Park a few years ago against England.

This is a disaster for West Indies cricket: just as they get some momentum behind their team their infrastructure threatens to undo all their good work. This is a new ground as well, built especially for the World Cup.

Shocking is the only word for it really, their goes my afternoon relaxing with the cricket on.

They are talking about relocating the match now.

The worst thing is that they didn't even bother getting someone to have a few run ups in the week to see what it was going to be like, especially as they already had their worries. This isn't a surprise to them, yet they did nothing about it.

I am ****ed off and I am sitting in my living room, think of all the poor people that have spent thousands going out there, yes I am sure they will have a very nice holiday out there but the likleyhood is that they wont see any cricket what soever. I don't think this match will be played this week whatsoever, the logistics of swapping everything from one test ground another must be a nightmare.

Not quite sure what Nasser's point about Chris Gayle choosing to bowl so he should just get on with it was. Pretty stupid comment if you ask me.

So for the second week running, my plan to stay in on Saturday night and watch cricket has been ruined. Better go out and get wasted instead....

My mates just texted me from the ground to say they are gutted and just a bit miffed is an understatement.

In Kingston they were playing to 3/4 empty grounds because the locals could n't afford to get in, but they don't have the nous to charge the locals less or let them in free for the after tea session. As Yorkshire blue says just as they get some momentum going they come up with this. Thought they may have learnt some lessons since the badly organised cricket world cup, but alas no!!

The sport of cricket, like horse racing, once again proves it's a multi million sport run by idiots,so bloody frustrading, really does'nt help the test match cause.

Don't worry mate, me you Don and Scrounger can sit and laugh at Daisy and Chadded entertaining their loved ones.

Geoff Boycott and Tony Cozier on Test Match Special have come up with a solution. The Antigua National (known locally as St. John's) Ground is in fine condition and they are playing a 2 day game there on Monday and Tuesday. Their idea was to postpone the domestic match and switch the test from the Recreation to the National for a 4 day contest (which most end up being anyway).

Most annoying thing was that we were well on course to surpass our previous test innings....

We get to keep those runs, right? Christ knows, we need them.

If the match is moved then we wouldn't and it would be treated as a new test match. If it is played at this ground, the fact that play as only been abandoned for the day would mean that we probably would keep these runs. :)

Watching it at home at the moment, what a complete shambles! The ICC and the West Indies Cricket Board should be ashamed of themselves. Apparently the WICB was told in November that there was no way this ground would be ready for this Test Match and the advice was ignored.

At the St John's ground they tend to end up a 5 day bore draw. It use to vie with Colombo to be the flattest pitch in the world and was IIRC where Lara broke the individual test run record with his 375 and 400*.

The last 3 games there have all been drawn and the last game to get a result was when the WIndies chased down over 400 to win (Sarwan and Chanderpaul I think both got tons).

I don't think its been used since the World Cup, as I know when the Convicts toured they played at the North Sound ground and had problems with its outfield.

Will be interesting to see how it goes now, especially without time to properly prepare it.

Well after all that, its going to re-start on Sunday at the venue England have been training at for the past 2 days. Now a 5 match series, but thesd 10 balls will be wiped from the history books, so effectively its a 4 match series. Not bad from my POV as it should mean i can catch more of the game as i would have barely watched any of the first 2 days had it started on Friday!

Nasser and Athers seemed to think its going to be a lot more "spicy" than it used to be, especially as they basically have just a day to prepare the pitch. Be interesting to see if the side changes again ...

The Antigua Recreation Ground has been given the go-ahead for tomorrow's Third Test by the match referee, Alan Hurst, so it's all systems go (again!).

Chris Gayle has a few reservations about the outfield, but at least it isn't based on sand. As The General says, the pitch, which had been used as nets for the abandoned Second Test, is predicted to be a bit 'spicy'. The net (no pun intended) result is that Steven Harmison is expected to return in place of Jimmy Anderson, who must be one of the unluckiest cricketers around if he is dropped on the basis of a Test appearance that lasted ten balls, none of which he had any influence over whatsoever!
