England Tour of South Africa

Thank **** for that.

Thrilling stuff. Can we just win the toss at Jo'burg, opt to bat and send Onions in to open. It'll save the shreds of my nerves that are left.

During the days play I was actually thinking that it might be time for Onions to be dropped for Sidebottom (much as I hate him) as he hasn't been among the wickets and has wasted some important new ball spells. Given his heroics though it would take a bold move to change the team now! Great bottle from him, and also a lengthy stay at the crease from Anderson shouldnt be overlooked. It's great to see the tail take their batting seriously and the results it can bring......the days of Malcolm, Tufnell, Mullally and Such were quite funny amongst the dross of that era but it is good to see some application from the tail.

I would just like to say that was absolutely outstanding. never thought i could get so much enjoyment out of seeing so few runs scored in a days test cricket. 160 odd... for the stattos of you out there and/or those that can be bothered what is the least amount of runs scored in a full days cricket?

I think the lowest is around 95, which Pakistan accumulated in a test match against the convicts in Brisbane in the 50's.

I wouldn't mind betting Englands lowest would include a certain C Tavare batting :zzzzz: :zzzzz:

The 1958/59 England tour of Australia had some particularly slow scoring, I believe former Essex stalwart Trevor (Barnacle) Bailey had some lengthy, but not very productive innings in that series.

Also another former Essex & England Captain J W H T Douglas was renowned for his snail like tendencies. The convicts called him Johnny Won't Hit Today, laugh a minute those Australians.

4th Test at Jo'burg

England win the toss and opt to bat. Sideshow comes in for Onions.

The Saffers finally drop pie chucker Harris for McLaren, and Parnell comes in for the injured de Wet.

Here's hoping England don't suffer a repeat of 1999, when they were reduced to 2/4 on the first morning.

I'd have taken a draw before the series started.....

Besides which, we really should be 2-1 down anyway!

From Peter Cherry, TMS inbox: "You've got to feel sorry for Colly. He must have this recurring dream that one day, just once, before he retires, he might be able to stride out behind a thumping great score and bat freely to rack some up for a declaration, rather than having to march, stiff upper lipped, to block stoically for hours to save England's blushes yet again."

Except he isn't this time, he's got 36 off 41 balls!

Thank god for Colly!!
