England Tour of South Africa

55-1 now .. i dodn't want to be chasing many more than about 220 but thats looks a bit of a forlorn hope at the minute as the lead reaches 73

I agree, but I can't see the Saffers collapsing as they did in Durban. They'll want to bat England right out of this, and depending on how quickly they score wull want 4 sessions or so to bowl England out.

Hmm ... the lead is now 219 with 9 wickets in hand, somehow i can't see them collapsing to quite the levels i'd hoped for

Actually this is turning out very much like last summer (disregard Edgbaston and the rain)

1st Test .. England hang on grimly for the draw (ditto)
2nd Test .. England win in fine style (ditto)
4th Test .. England blown away, series level with one to play (ditto)
5th Test .. the Oval, words not needed (??)

SA have collapsed to 349/3. Being the conservative Saffer captain that he is I doubt if Smith will declare until they have a lead of 500+. IMO they already have enough on the board, it's a question of whether the Saffers can bowl England out, if England can save the game.

Seff Efrika declare with a lead of 465.

Surely if we bat well enough for a draw, we'll win this.

87/0, solid start from these two. If they can see us through to close of play then maybe we can dare to think about saving the match or even the most unlikely of victories. Enormous if though, Saffers still massive favourites, especially with neither Trott or KP looking in especially good touch.

that's my thinking, it's a reachable total with the amount of overs to play. Can't see us doing it though

It is certainly a reachable target. Fourth innings scores are increasing in test cricket as pitches don't break up as much and scoring rates increase.

Scoring 300 in the 4th innings was more or less unthinkable a generation ago, but is now a regular occurrence. It is only a matter of time before someone scores 466 to win a game but I'd be surprised (and elated) if it was England.
