England Tour of South Africa

After being battered on Friday England have the Saffers at 56/4 in the 15th over, with Smith, Amla, Dunimy & de Villiers back in the hutch.

England really need to attack now and expose the weak South African lower order. Keep the field up even though the powerplay is over.

Agreed, and it looks like Strauss will do that, unless someone disappears for 10 in an over, then it's back to the normal 50 over tactic of letting the game drift.

Looks like England should win comfortably after Jimmy's career best, but my stat of the day:

Strauss averages just 20.20 at a strike-rate of 68.01 over his last 10 ODI innings. How long until his place in the one-day side comes under scrutiny?

Before the KP/Moores fiasco Strauss was considered surplus to requirements to the one day side. It seems to me that Flower favours one capatin for Test & ODI's (T20 aside) therefore it won't probably be until next summer. There's one match left in this series, and Strauss is unlikely to tour Bangladesh in the New Year, Cook I think will captain a young / development squad there IMO.

England win by 7 wickets and lead the series 2-1. As poor as the bowlers appeared on Friday, the attack led by Anderson were very good today. Sets up the last match in Durban on Friday nicely.

Hmm, good point. Looks like we're stuck with Strauss for a while longer.

Trott is looking good and hungry!
The powers of concentration and self belief are so very important in cricket as a batsman. One ball and it is match over. Trott wants it.
Cook is a solid player but out of all the quotes Vaughan has come out with on the back of retiring the only one I agree with is about Cook being too young to groom as the next captain. His place should not be as assured as the England coaches make out.

Another note is a big well done to England staff on asking Goochie to help out with coaching before the first test. He is recognised as one of the best batting coaches around and the guy is a true great and a gentleman of the game. I hope it works out well for all parties.

Great stuff

Let's not get too carried away though. It sounds as though there's not much in the pitch for the bowlers, although there was a period of something like 24 balls without a run but not a lot to trouble the batsman.

SA now 28-1

Steyn missing out on this game is a massive boost for us. Both teams look a little light on the bowling front with 3 man seam attacks and no allrounder (assuming Kallis doesn't bowl). With Steyn missing I would have like to have seen us go with the more attacking option of an extra bowler and bank on our main batters getting enough against the South African attack but guess England wouldnt have known Steyn was out until just before the toss and wouldnt have wanted to change their line up.

Indeed! Always nice to get Smith out early though.
