Echo - Fee holding up Mulgrew deal

god if we aint prepared to pay that for a quality left back are we in like financial trouble or something? =/ /

No, just prudent.
Only releasing that kind of money if it adds value to the playing staff* - in this case it obviously would & I hope we get him in ASAP.

* - I'm guessing this has evolved since the Paynter/Foran/Harrold spends

If we lose out on a player like Mulgrew then the board need shooting.

He is such a class act with so much potential and that 150k could easily become over a million after a few seasons.

When you think about some of the **** we have signed recently (revell 150k although undecided yet) then we have to get Charlie in.

I seems to say in the echo that the fee is rumoured rather than actual for all we know it could be 350k which is more likely given our recent spending record?

As for championship defender i would like some big strong no nonsense 6ft + who plays it short and has decent postioning for set plays (doesnt every club lol)

And finally i would p my pants if chris powell came back. My all time favourite player and a bout as honest a pro as you will find. Maybe a little player/ defensive coach role to help him get his badges. You know it makes sense chris.

If we lose him through prevarication it is not prudent, more downright negligent.

Can't believe he's so cheap (relatively).

I agree with both points, Mick, and if we did lose him like this then someone would need shooting. Bottom line though is that we don't know all the facts yet.

Maybe the deal also involves an exchange of players and we're still trying to work out how much it will cost us for them to take Harrold as part of the package?

So we haven't actually tabled an offer yet?

I'm disappointed to hear that. I don't mind the club negotiating a better deal (on this one I'd actually be more concerned with arguing what percentage of any profit goes to Wolves than arguing over £50,000), but I'd be keen to wrap this one up.

We got £110,000 for Hammell and Mulgrew is definitely worth the extra £40,000.

Could be that the Echo are getting their figures wrong though, as I can't see why we wouldn't pay that fee for him............ Seems a bit strange.

150K for Charlie Mulgrew is like the sale of the century,I honestly valued him at about 300-350k.
He is a player that just gets better and better, and with say two seasons of playing in nearly every game,as said before, I think he could easily become more than a £1000,000 player. Don't blow it Southend as you are likely to pay that amount for somebody who may not fit in and is half as good. He is settled, gets on with the rest of the squad and knows the way we play. A truly class act.

Why are we so bad at getting transfer fees right ?
Harrold, Paynter, Foran, Revell, MacDonald.
And then we don,t ask nowhere near enough from Hereford for Hooper. He was a massive success for them as he suits their system, and I'm sure they would gladly pay at least 125k for him, with his goals per game ratio when playing for them.

I honestly don't think Hereford have that sort of money. I think I am right in saying that they haven't bought a player in seven years - would be much more interested in making sure the sell-on clause is generous and water-tight.

If this transfer is held up over the sake of £50,000, then I for one will be hugely disappointed in the management. It's all very well taking the moral high ground in terms of wages, but when you pay £100k for someone like Matt Harrold, and you're refusing to pay an extra £50k for a great talent like Mulgrew, Who is a class apart in this league with a deadly left foot, it crosses a line.

......and £150 000 for Revell!

£150k is a great price for Mulgrew and think we would be at a loss to let this fall through. At least wages and the like are agreed which is usually the main stumbling block with transfers. Really glad he wants to be here though and hope they can sort the fee out. He was a brilliant addition to our squad this season.

I can see why we are trying to barter Wolves down, thats usual business practise .. my only fear is we may alert other clubs to his availability and get involved in a bidding war

I am not Mulgrew's biggest fan, but considering some of the players we have paid 150k for in the last couple of years, I think he is easily worth that

We still have 60 odd days before the season starts, assuming Tilly feels he is coming here then I feel he is right to haggle a bit. I think #150k seems more than fair to me but then if we can save #50k towards another player then so be it.

Also lets be honest the Echo probably made up there figures anyway...

I have got to say that i rate Mulgrew and have since the first game he had at the hall , i also recall many of this board slating him and saying he was useless , so i'm over the moon that now so many have realised that the boy is class and i for one haven't missed Hammell in the slightest.

Sign him up Tilson.
