For me Barker was the best player at the club last year and would desrve the captaincy even if easton did re-sign. Even if Harris was the senior Pro at the club i personally don't belive a stiker makes a good captain as he can't look upon the whole pitch as a centre back can....

Good of Chris to come out with that statement at such a time! I really like Craig Easton, he's done a difficult job well and been an excellent servant and representative of the club. If he is off, then I wish him nothing but the best. I think I've said before somewhere, why not offer him terms along the lines of a reduced contract for one year with the incentive of an increase if promoted?

Because he wouldn't be good enough in L1 so why guarantee an ageing and average (going from comments on here) player a contract if we went up? IMO Easton would be a squad player if he stayed here and behind Grant, Ferdinand and Sawyer in the pecking order... So why offer him a 2 year deal?

^^^^ was a link confirming Easton had definately rejected a contract offer and that the club wished him the best for the future, seems to have been taken down or something at the moment....

Long as we got the replacement in, then we be ok, talking of experienced midfielders, we have Grant, Sawyer & maybe N’Diaye who played over 40+ games in the Championship!

Really was one of the reasons the club survived last season on the pitch.Really appreciate that someone like him was prepared to throw his lot in with us when nobody wanted to come here. Thanks Craig (I hope the real reason he might be going isn,t the Voltage pink shirt ,Luggy did warn us!!!)

Being Skipper of the thrown together side could not have been easy, but Easton made a brilliant job of it and gets my thanks for that alone.

Rarely did he not do a good job on the pitch, bar the possible exception of a couple of games when he returned from injury.
He also, as many have said served the club very well off the pitch giving up his free time at various charity functions etc and always found time for the fans.

IMO he was worthy of his mid-field role and helped Ferdinand develope into the squad. Sawyer was only a bit player last season and did not show the sort of form he did when with us before. Grant too often for me did not play like he wanted to be with us, especially 2nd half of the season.
So yes I think it would be a mistake to let him go without trying to reach some sort of compromise, especially when we get injuries and suspensions hit us as it did last season when we really were found wanting.

Will we persuade better players to come here, who knows until the seaon is well under way for us to judge.

If he does I go, may I add my thanks to those who have already done so and wish Easty all the very best.

Agree with everything that everyone is saying about Easton, good captain, served the club well on and off the pitch.

The only thing is, we can't put this in the context of his wage demands and the salary structure that is now in place. Only those at the club in the know can do this and I can only assume that they feel we could do better with the money.

We have to trust that they know what they're doing. I hope they do as Easton seems a decent bloke who deserves to be treated honourably.

sums it up for me. none of us will truly know how much of an effect his captaincy had on pulling together what was an entirely thrown together squad. Its a strange thing, we all know he's not the best player we've ever seen at the hall, but whenever i saw him he was giving it 100 percent, and could more then handle it at this level, and perhaps behind the scenes his effect as captain was more then we can fathom.

I hope he stays and becomes part of what will hopefully be a successful season next year, but to echo others sentiments, given our obvious financial weakness, if he wants more then we can offer, then he has to move on to other things, and if he does, surely noone can begrudge his move and his role last season.

[h=1]Easton insists talks still ongoing with Southend United[/h]By westfield shrimper

Shrimpers skipper Craig Easton is not yet leaving the club just yet according to the player himself, whatever his agent says.

Craig Easton: Will he stay or will he go?
According to his agent Tuesday Shrimpers skipper Craig Easton was on his way from Roots Hall after refusing a new deal.
However, according to a tweet from Echo journalist Chris Phillips Captain Craig is still hoping he can remain at the club.
Phillips wrote: 'Craig Easton has NOT told Southend he will definitely be leaving. He's rejected initial offer of a contract but talks are still ongoing.'
This contradicts the words of his agent Craig Hart.
He told www.skysports.com: "Craig has turned down the offer of a new deal at Southend and will leave the club. Craig is a free agent and I am talking to a number of clubs about a possible deal for him."
Starting to look like a typical agent ploy to try and get the Shrimpers to increase what's on the table, good luck there mate, more dosh from Uncle Ron, blood out of a stone would be easier.
It could also be at the age of 32 Craig is looking for a two-year offer to see him through to his dotage if only one is being put forward.
A lot may depend on whether Crystal Palace midfielder Alassane N'Diaye signs on the dotted line, an answer was expected sometime today as the Eagles youngster looks over personal terms covering a season long loan.
Whether this also means the club are still looking at former loanee and out of contract Swindon Town middle of the park man Michael Timlin we will wait and see.
Easton joined the club during Blues boss Paul Sturrock's summer revolution and was immediatly named the Shrimpers new skipper.
Only last month Captain Craig was optimistic of remaining at Roots Hall: www.southendunited-mad.co.uk

After being told last week that he was speaking to other clubs and now the "he's definately leaving / talks are ongoing" situation it sounds look Mr Easton has found that other clubs are only offering similar to (or maybe less than) us.
