Does Cyberbullying exist on SZ?

Cyberbullying has been defined as-

"the use of cell phones, instant messaging, e-mail, chat rooms or social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to harass, threaten or intimidate someone."


The question is does it exist on SZ and if so what can be done about it?

IMO it certainly does exist on SZ,which is one reason why I've set up this poll to test out other Zoners opinions.

The question of what can be done about it(if in fact it does exist on SZ)is rather more difficult to answer.
Personally, I feel that withdrawing the reputation facility would be a step in the right direction.Or as others (like Mick)have suggested, allowing people to opt out of using or receiving this facility,altogether.Failing that, I would argue for the reputation facility to be made private, and not public as at present,since as it stands this can be too easily be used to create a bandwagon effect by unscrupulous people hunting in packs.

The owners of SZ need to be aware of this problem and take steps to deal with it,whenever and wherever it arises.There are guidelines for this, as I've been made aware from doing a part-time course on ICT and e-safety(I'd be happy to pass on the guidelines I have to anyone who pm's me with a request for them).

Dealing with the serious point you raise though, I don't think it's a big problem on here. There have been in the past instances which I would consider cyber bullying that have had to be dealt with by the owners/mods, but obviously a lot of this goes on behind the scenes and away from the public boards.

There have been a few instances where posters have got abusive towards other posters that the mods have had to step in and deal with, which is unfortunate but sadly inevitable. Obviously no-one gets paid for running this site so no doubt things do get missed. In those circumstances help from posters is required which is why there is a 'report post function'. This alerts all mods who will look at the posts and deal with as they consider appropriately.

Quite a lot goes on behind the scenes to keep things on track, but the best form of moderation is posters self modding and showing a modicum of respect to others and try to act in a way they would in real life, keep personal insults to a minimum and debate the posts not the poster with resorting to abuse.

Like anything in life, there's plenty of people out there that like to wind you up. I've had plenty of run ins in the past with certain posters, but now I just ignore them and they pretty much ignore me. Despite them being polar opposites politically, in fact in the flesh they're pretty good and decent people - True Blue, Rusty S, J etc...

Im with MK and the others on this . The Mod's do a great job of keeping things under control and if there are any major issues accounts are closed. There are strained relationships on here but it's mostly resolved sensibly and intelligently.

Tony, I did think about what you said recently and I can understand why you said it. The written word is deceptive sometimes - if a poster doesn't put a smiley in, then it's not always clear that they're being ironic so it's too bad if they get a different reaction to what they had intended. Life's a gamble - a great track by Penetration, by the way - so every time we post something on here then we take a risk of getting a reaction we didn't want. Too bad. On the other hand, I don't like to see people being ganged up on and though I might think "oh no, what's he gone and said that for?" BarnaBlue is my brudda and I shoulda look out for him - ergo pointing out 'everyone and his mate' having a pop at him yesterday.

This site is great often because of its edge. Only recently, it became greater because of the way people rallied round in support of 'southend4ever.' I love you guys. Except Spartan, of course. :smiles:

If someone's being nasty stop coming here, create a new account with a new name or just do the simple thing and find out who they are and rather than posting a diatribe of "you don't know who I am" etc, just hit them, hard, with no warning. How do you define it though Barna? Would you include the personal attack you made on Number 11 yesterday as bullying? If so that would put you in the same category.
Oh, and one thing on here is almost guaranteed - If you moan about Rep, you will get plenty of it.
