Disgrace

Thornton loved playing the pantomime villain. Diving shouldn't be a part of the game but for the freekick from which they scored, Maher stuck his leg out after Thronton did him like a kipper. Other times he went down very easily and this isn't going to impress opposition fans.

However, there's a lot of rubbish on here about him being a villain for "winding up" our players. For God's sake, it's a professional sport and the greater goal should be getting three points rather than winning a battle of pride or machismo.

In my eyes, McCormack should take the blame for defeat today

I agree, it's all about the 3 points.
Whilst we would all like to win the game honourably, has to be said that fair play doesn't always get the desired result.

IMO the blame shouldn't rest with one player.
If we had got our act together earlier on in the game, McCormacks s/off shouldn't have mattered.

Very harsh. No one player should ever really take the blame for a result. For what it's worth, although Thornton went down like he'd been shot every time he was touched, most of the key refereeing decisions surrounding him were correct. However, I had a clear view of the incident that led to McCormack's sending off and it was a blatant, cynical, dive. Not in the penalty box or even a dangerous area to give a shooting chance - but in an attempt to get someone sent off. Horrible to see.

My thoughts exactly. No way should have Macca got his 2nd booking, as he didn't even make contact with Thornton. Thornton just threw himself in the air as soon as he saw Macca making the challenge.

Perhaps we should look to recruit an evil b*st**d to play for us,

After all Col Ewe have Duguid & Borient have Thornton...

All our bookings seem to be for dissent & unsporting behaviour, if we're going to get our players sent off I'd like to see them walking for nice meaty tackles at least.. (Not including Maccas as he didn't touch the ****...)

I wonder if you will be saying the same at Xmas if we are near the bottom of the table.

Quite truthfully it's the same as it was, admittedly after only 1 game, as it was last year. Great when we take a lead but clueless when we go behind.

I wonder if you'll be saying the same if Tilly saves us from dropping into the Conference, then takes us to two promotions in a row and two national finals at Cardiff. Oh wait...

can't understand why Tilson didn't/doesn't sign Thornton - hes an obvious talent -

Because he plays in Maher's position and, despite Thornton being clearly a better footballer (even if he is a cheating c**t), there's no way in hell that we'll be replacing Captain Undroppable any time soon.

The referee that gave us the penalty when Nicky Nic "made the most" of some contact in the play offs was the one and only Barry Knight!!

However the point is that Nicky Nic, nor any other Southend player is constantly throwing himself around like Sean Thornton.

Did any one else notice the foul on Kevin Maher about 5 mins before the end? It was identical if not worse then McCormack and the Orient player did not get booked?

Rubbish ref, sod off back to the premier****

I may be wrong about this, but wasn't Barry Knight the ref who sent Leo Roget off in '97 when he mistook him for Jeroen Boere?

Hi all
Just read the entire thread.

Some good points raised and some stupid ones also.

The fact is, anyone in this division would love to have Thornton playing for them.

The bloke is all over the pitch and gives 110%

To say that the ref was LOFCs 12th man is sour grapes.
As has been said, these things even up over a season.
Are you saying that no Southend player would try to get another player sent off?
Is your manager Gandhi?

It was an even game until Macormack got sent off and it could have gone either way before or after that happened.

a gay site for southend fans, now thats something, i will get my old friend larry lurex to get him involved in it, with these east london shirtlifters rememberthis that the area of leyton orient has the highest amount of terrorists in the country

Then nearly 4 months without a win then straight back down to league 1. Oh wait.....

Thornton did not get McCormack sent off - he got himself sent off by rising to the bait - how can another person be responsibile for what another fully grown adult does on the football pitch?

McCormack lost his temper and went flying on when already on a yellow card - are you telling me you condone that action then, and he was not at fault in any way?

I am not defending Thornton, I am trying to put a balanced view across, clearly I am on a losing battle here!

Disagree. It was the ref that sent him off. Having watched The Championship yesterday I can see that there was no contact between Macca and Thornton. The player, however decided to go down anyway. However, the ref had his back to it, couldn't have seen anything, but gave it anyway.

More to the point, the first yellow wasn't a foul in any way.

I think the first was for being gobby to the ref

That's what I thought as well - the dissent brought the yellow card not the 'foul' (for it was a poor decision). This was the disappointing thing for me, if he hadn't have been so stupid in the first half then he wouldn't have been sent off in the second, regardless of Thornton's conduct.

The first yellow was for dissent, which shows a lack of discipline and professionalism this is something which Tilson must address if this team are to sink or swim.
