Disgrace

Thornton did not get McCormack sent off - he got himself sent off by rising to the bait - how can another person be responsibile for what another fully grown adult does on the football pitch?

McCormack lost his temper and went flying on when already on a yellow card - are you telling me you condone that action then, and he was not at fault in any way?

I am not defending Thornton, I am trying to put a balanced view across, clearly I am on a losing battle here!

For some people, a balanced view simply doesn't exist, RC!

Obviously Thornton's actions were a catalyst for the sending off but Macca was stupid in rising to the bait, I completely agree with you. He picked up his first booking for chatting back to the ref which is just plain stupid and the second instance he lost his temper and flew off the rail. I can't help but think that despite Macca's ability he could be a real liability in terms of getting carded meaning we then lose him for important games! He needs to know how to challenge his temper into the game and get us a result. We all know the best way to annoy the opposition is by playing better and scoring more, Macca needs to realise this too.

I agree, McCormack has bundles of ability, and he cannot allow that to be undermined by a lack of discipline.

Trouble is, some players are just like that, and if you took that out of his game, then it may make him half the player he currently is.

Tough one, but I fear we may have to accept the odd red card in return for a whole hearted competitor who has the opportunity to become one of, if not the, best midfielder in this league.

Che Wilson and Matt Harrold have their own threads full of blame, even Flahavan has one for the free kick.

Yet McCormack is the one player who can be held responsible yet doesnt get any criticism.

I think he is a fantastic player but if he doesnt stop getting booked then he is a liability. I appreciate he might not be the same player without that fighting spirit but Id rather play Bailey and have eleven men on the pitch.

agree with you there. macca is such a great player and i love his tackles but shame he gets some many cards as he did last season. we really miss him and maher when they get banned for too many cards.

To be honest Thornton's theatrics wound me up but there are going to be players doing that all season, after the first couple of minutes of the second half we didn't look like we were going to create much.

never been so frustraited as i was today watching the referee and thornton.

ref - fell for every trick in the book and for basically being orients 12th man. he should be reported for his performance today and letting diving into the game from more than one player.

thornton - can't beleive a player who looked a pretty good footballer would dive like a little girl and try and get a number of players sent off. makes you think how orient fans can cheer his name.

this for me ruined the game and you always knew they were going to get a late winner as we have seen soooooooo many times.

Spot on Matty...cant beleive what I saw today. In all my years of watching football I have never witnessed such a diabolical performance from a referree who was constantly conned by a player who's sole objective was getting Maher or Mccormack sent off. It was interesting during the warm up Gray was pointing out players to Thornton and I commented to my Dad ''oh look, Gray is telling him who to look out for''... well we now know it was more like ''who has a short fuse Wayne?'' I hope the referee if he has any pride will look at the instances and hold his hand up and say yes I was wrong...but I have a feeling that the fat ******* was more concerned about getting off the pitch without breaking into to much sweat.

All well and good getting on your high horse saying McCormack shouldn't have risen to the bait but in a high pressure situation like a local derby where you're getting wound up by a cheating, arrogant toerag you can't blame him. I would've felt like smacking him. McCormacks a hardman and he won't pull out of a tackle, no ones going to change him. And at least we have more back up in that area this season, although Bailey did sod all when he came on. The ref is equally to blame, constantly falling for Thornton's dives.

Wrong.
Mc Cormack is a professional, and he should know better than to be antagonised by someone who is trying to wind him.

Well fair enough, but I assure you that like every other Southend fan in Roots Hall you would be shouting for a penalty. I really feel that this type of cheating should be cut out in the game but it doesn't hide the fact that when it is Southend's favour it is accepted.

The referee that gave us the penalty when Nicky Nic "made the most" of some contact in the play offs was the one and only Barry Knight!!

However the point is that Nicky Nic, nor any other Southend player is constantly throwing himself around like Sean Thornton.

Did any one else notice the foul on Kevin Maher about 5 mins before the end? It was identical if not worse then McCormack and the Orient player did not get booked?

Rubbish ref, sod off back to the premier****

I know its boring to blame and slate the ref - BUT - I can't remember a match where the officials got so many things wrong - from both sides .

For example, first half Harrold gets his shirt nearly ripped off when trying to jump from a corner - nothing given . Then Gilbert fists one away from Wayne's head as he's about to nod in - missed it completely

And when Thornton threw himself in the air about 1 minute before Macca slid in , the ref had his back to him - so why didn't he at least consult the lino ? -even Bennett did that

can't understand why Tilson didn't/doesn't sign Thornton - hes an obvious talent - its like Maher and Macca didn't learn what a load of handbags at Colchester U cost the club last year -

there is a rather nasty line of thought that if you are going to do a player and get sent off take a lesson from Roy Keane - and do it properly -

Thornton loved playing the pantomime villain. Diving shouldn't be a part of the game but for the freekick from which they scored, Maher stuck his leg out after Thronton did him like a kipper. Other times he went down very easily and this isn't going to impress opposition fans.

However, there's a lot of rubbish on here about him being a villain for "winding up" our players. For God's sake, it's a professional sport and the greater goal should be getting three points rather than winning a battle of pride or machismo.

In my eyes, McCormack should take the blame for defeat today

Probably the day he realises that you are better qualified to be manager and steps down in your favour.

I wonder if you will be saying the same at Xmas if we are near the bottom of the table.

Quite truthfully it's the same as it was, admittedly after only 1 game, as it was last year. Great when we take a lead but clueless when we go behind.

Clueless when we go behind? We conceded that goal about 4 minutes from time. With one substitution left to us, not much time to change the game then when we were already down to 10.

I've always felt that Tilly is sometimes tentative in his use of subs, however yesterday with the sending off of McCormack his options became limited, and I can't think of a manager, with a team down to 10, drawing 1-1 who would chase the game.
