DiCanio

New Sunderland manager.

:hilarious:

I saw the TV coverage of his arrival at Sunderland. Looked like the circus had come to town. Have to say I don't have much time for Di Canio as a man or for his politics, but I do like a character in football. Will watch this one fall out with interest.

Have to say I think this has a car crash written all over it........He may give an initial boost but I can foresee many issues!!!! next season......as you say will be interesting to watch

Not sure whether to put this here or in ex-shrimpers, but Paolo Di Canio, in his Sunderland press conference, asked the journos to check with Trevor Sinclair and Chris Powell if he is a racist....

The whole faux outrage at this appointment is really bugging me, is he only a fascist now he's a Premier League manager? Did it not count before? Is questioning someone's suitability for the job based on their beliefs not in itself a bit fascist?

I don't think it's a case of questioning Di Canio's suitability based on his beliefs, I think the problem more lies in how Di Canio utterly refuses to clarify what he means or has meant in the past, or even field questions. Of course he's entirely within his right to do so, but he then can't condemn the press when they make an issue of this refusal. The outpouring of anger from Sunderland probably has a lot more to do with the situation the club finds itself in.

Tor-Kristian Karlsen with another fascinating insight into where football clubs could do better, looking at Di Canio's contentious appointment - http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/...-canio-sunderland-manager-research?CMP=twt_gu

Perhaps Ron should've had a word before we rushed into appointing Brown...

I was pondering this last night, and though I wouldn't have been too happy at Di Canio as manager, the idea of him working with Ron is positively mouth-watering - another 'Zone competition on "how long before there's a fist fight...."

Funny, I was thinking the same but more concentrating on Brown. Ron doesn't strike me as a fist-fighting kind of guy, but he does seem difficult to work with/for and he's definitely got an ego. What concerns me is, when the going gets tough, how will the egos of Martin and Brown cope with it all? Any room is going to struggle with both of them in it at the best of times.

Regardless of saying that Trevor Sinclair & Chris Powell are his best mates, maybe he should look under what fascism means:

Fascism views political violence, war, and imperialism as a means to achieve national rejuvenation and asserts that "superior" nations and races should attain living space by displacing weak and inferior ones.

Well done on David Milliband and Durham Union of Mine Workers. Total scumbag, and if I was a non-white player (or even a white player with a conscience) at Sunderland I'd be looking to my agent to move me on.

Well that's just it, isn't it? In his autobiography Di Canio praises the way in which ethnic minorities have adapted to live in cities like London, but vilified attitudes taken in other Italian cities where tensions are high. Whether or not you agree with that opinion, you can hardly say that it falls under the remit of judging another race to be weak or inferior.

Di Canio's labelled a fascist because in the past he's claimed to be one, but does his political stance really fit with that of a cast-iron fascist? Probably not. I don't think Di Canio's a racist, I don't even think he's a fascist. I think he has his opinions and he's a little confused, and was quick to adopt the fascist image when he was at Lazio and enjoyed the adulation he received from genuine fascists.

It doesn't make him any less of an arse, but I also don't quite think it makes him Mussolini's heir.

Yeah, but he's never denounced his beliefs has he though? Easy to make excuses for him as he's a circus clown.

Why would he denounce his beliefs?

To put the whole furore about his (apparent) extreme political philosophies to bed? He has to realise that being labelled a fascist is not a good thing (neither is being a communist Rusty S). Fascism (for me and many other) allies with Hitler, concentration camps, and they very things that your and my ancestors fought a war against.

To come across as a cuddly, non-racist fascist is at best idiotic, and at worse profoundly repulsive.

I know full well what fascism alligns itself with, but forcing somebody to denounce their own beliefs bears far more of a hallmark of fascism than what Di Canio has ever explicitly announced as a belief of his.

I'm not forcing anyone to do anything. He obviously hasn't got the chops to admit it, therefore he's not only an (alledged) fascist he's also a coward.
