Daniel Bentley

Wolves just signed Sam Johnstone as number 2.
Johnstone wanted out of Crystal Palace because he wanted to be a starting keeper, I doubt Wolves have signed him to put him on the bench. Possibly this means Sa is off, which would keep Bentley as No 2.

Bentley's on the bench instead of Sa today, nothing has been announced but presumably that means Sa is gone.

Clearly hasn’t done enough at Wolves for them to see him as Sa’s replacement. Shame. I guess for him it’s a question of whether to drop back into the championship and try to be a number 1, or whether to do a Scott Carson, take the money and be that English number 2 or 3 keeper for as long as he can make it last.

As expected,he’s lost his place on Wolves’ bench but he’ll still be raking it in— don’t suppose he’ll want to try to go back and find a Championship bench to sit on.

Imagine a job where you don't have to actually do the job, just train for it several days per week and then get 30k+ a week.
Money,money,money, must be funny…..
He’d have been welcome back on loan here at the club he claimed he loved so much …
I’m told he’s now only 4th choice at Wolves—presumably they’ve got a promising youngster.

I often wonder how strange it must be for keepers.

The decision to take the money and hope for a chance, maybe sit on the bench your whole career but retire with £££, or take less money and play some football, make some memories, maybe some promotions. I like to think you only live once so play the game, but then if someone offered me £xx to prettry much do nothing it would be tempting, look at scott carson for instance.

True but he could ask to be loaned out and get some game time and still collect the wage.

Speaking with a retired professional goal keeper they said it’s living the dream to train with your mates all week, potentially help with pre match warm up but not have the stress of going on while picking up the same salary.

Some may think that way, but DB doesn't come over as the type of player that would be happy with not even making the matchday squad.

It's a very curious situation, at least from the outside. Obviously none of us know the full story though.

There are goalkeepers who go almost their entire careers as a number 2/3 and barely ever play. I was reading the other day about a goalkeeper at Bayer Leverkusen who's been with the club since 2012 and made two first-team appearances... Also, top-flight clubs nowadays seem to hoard goalkeepers, often having 4/5 in their squad when really you only need two plus a youngster who can be called upon if needed. A footballer's career is short (although less so for keepers) so I'd rather play more even if it means a bit less money, but it's difficult for goalkeepers as there's only one of you in the team.

Bentley doesn't appear to have much prospect of game time at Wolves any time soon with Sa and Johnstone ahead of him. I'm sure Championship clubs would be queuing up to sign him on loan.

Bit like being a fireman but a lot more money :Hilarious:
