he'll be able to speak to other teams from January onwards. a rule in the last year of a contract

only applies to players over the age of 23, dan will still only be 22 when his contract gets close to expiring so clubs won't be allowed to discuss terms with him until it's expired. Also domestically English teams can't approuch other English teams players within the 6 months

Had a conversation with someone yesterday who has contact with DB through Dan's love / deal with BMW Fairfield. According to him even though Dan turned down the offer the club made earlier in the season of a new deal, he has made a gentleman's agreement to not accept / further explore any offers until it is impossible for Southend to not win promotion to the Championship. If we do get promoted Dan will then see if the club can meet his needs with regards to a new contract. Anyone know anything about this?

I was going to raise this exact point. What happens if we get promoted to the championship? Surely with offers only from Championship clubs so far, he would stay.

That's not necessarily the case. If we made it into the Championship we'd be one of the smallest clubs there. Other clubs could easily afford to offer him more than we could.

Only clubs abroad would be able to talk to him from January, no English clubs can speak to him until he's into the last month of his contract or if they've agreed a fee with the club first and been given permission.

As I said its a misconception that you can which was down mainly to Football Manager who had the rule wrong for a while.

Its not the case at all with domestic clubs.

Overseas clubs can but domestic is I believe 30 days before the end of the contract.

EDIT: I remembered I asked the Football league about this a couple of years ago. Their reply

Thank you for your email.

The Football League does not have any Regulations that allow for Pre-Contract agreements.

Unless a player has been released from his contract, and is therefore a free agent, clubs are not able to sign any contractual agreements as players are under contract until the 30th June.

Thank you for contacting The Football League.

Top Championship clubs want him after 2 full seasons in League 2, who's to say that a small newly promoted Premiership team won't want him after a good season in League 1?

Hull were linked and are doing alright this season and could easily go straight back up.

That's ignoring the massive difference between the top and bottom of the Championship, although I see your point and if we went up this season wouldn't be that surprised if he stayed for a year to prove himself at that level and get a better move.

This would be a wrong move for Bentley IMO , Their turnaround of managers and players means they will linger in mid table for the next few season and can't be a great place to be at the moment , Hull or QPR would make sense with decent managers and stability as a club , can't see Leeds outbidding Hull or QPR if it gets into a bidding war

it's amazing how quickly times change

IIRC when DB's Dad travelled with us on the Zone coach at the start of his first full season as number 1, and there was already speculation linking him with Leeds, and another club, his dad stated that now he was number 1 he would not want to move to a club and "warm a bench".
Not sure if he still feels the same.

See your point.
But surely whoever they had in goal to get them into the Prem can't be too shabby ?

There first choice keeper is now out for up to 6 months, could change matters.

I think he will now wait on how we do- Leeds won't get to the £2m we are rumoured to want as a min- and I suspect our valuation reflects that actually we believe we can get promoted this year with him in the teamI think we have settled on taking the risk on a tribunal fee in a year and agreed with Dan that he will now stay the year and if we get promoted he will talk about his new contract (until then he focuses on us).I am happy with this because it shows we have ambition and if that means not selling our best assets as soon as bids come in, and we can find a way of managing that financially, we will.

Really don't understand where the figure of £2m has come from. We have a player in the last year of his contract who has already declared that he won't extend. As such he's a depreciating asset - worth less in January than he was in August and worth even less next summer. And I've never known a tribunal that helps the vendor either. The player is getting better and his value is getting worse - you may not like it, but it's a fact.

Equally do people SERIOUSLY believe that no one will talk to him until the end of his contract. Nothing will happen publically until then of course, but if he's as 'in demand' as people seem to think, conversation will be going on right now.

Again all been talked to death but the outcome of the tribunal debate and some very good work by other posters on the likely outcome was that the tribunal fee would likely not be hugely different from what QPR were offering. Which is probably why it makes sense that we turned it down given the difference he makes to the team.

The £2m was mentioned as being the area we were looking at for it to be interesting- can't trawl back through the threads but again say its £1.5m - point is we firmly rejected just over £1m

Reference being a fact, saying its a fact, however many times, does not make it one. My opinion is different to you opinion on this but I do not agree its a fact his value is getting worse. A top season in L1 may not mean we get a whole lot more but I believe there is every chance we will get something not very different to the QPR offer.

If we did get promoted and he did stay, the only certainty is that he'd see a lot of the ball and get a lot of goalkeeping practice!

the greater value, for me, is in us being more likely to retain our League 1 status with him between the sticks.
having a second season at this level is achievable with this squad so the greater risk is losing our best player (in my view).

if we stay up then we can consolidate and go again (i very much doubt we'll go up) so we keep him which is worth a lot to us plus then we might get more from the tribunal so the overall picture might not be depreciation
