I've decided to start with 10 players in the expectation that Tom H will turn up late in a taxi with his boots in his hands. I reckon a few of us have played in games when that has happened *obviously not with Tom arriving). I've also gone for a win, but I'm not sure why, probably because @Tangled up in Blue has been his normal jaundiced 'hope they lose' self.
Are the boots still caked in mud from last week?

Still in talks - Southend United boss Kevin Maher (Image: Daniel Hambury)

By Chris Phillips . Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher is still trying to add to his Shrimpers squad.

Blues remain in talks with Colchester United striker Tom Hopper plus a defender over a loan deal from a League Two side.

At least two other targets have also been identified and work is being done on the deals.

“We’re trying and we’d like to do so business,” said Maher.

“Whether that happens before the weekend I don’t know but there are things ongoing.

“Fingers crossed we can but it’s not always as easy as you want it to be, especially the later it gets in January as well.”

Blues head to Dagenham & Redbridge this weekend looking to bounce back from Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Barnet.

And Maher is determined to get back to winning ways despite not regarding the contest as much of a local derby.

“I don’t think it’s huge in terms of a derby game but we want to win the game,” said Maher.

“We want points on the board but whoever we were playing this weekend that would be the case.

“It’s been a really positive week but now we want the three points and that’s the main message for us.”

KM "Later in Jan the harder transfers get."
Interesting, intuitively I'd have thought it would be the opposite, as the closer to the EFL window shutting it focuses minds and less delaying tactics from player or selling club to see what other offers are around.

I’m sure they said at the start of January that they don’t want to rush, these things take time, want to get the right fit, spreadsheets, working hard, value for money blah blah. Now it gets harder the later you leave it 😂

I love that Kev makes the point it’s not a local derby.
I do agree however you know their manager will trying to get them up for it by saying the opposite. I'd hope in the dressing room that Kev makes it clear they will be desperate to get one over us and we must be desperate not to let that happen.
