Cricket World Cup 2019

The so-claimed ‘World’s best team’ look utter pants. Over-hyped and not for the first time.

The world's best team was with Roy and Hales (and then Bairstow) opening and scoring quickly

They are a different team with Vince opening.

Need to seriously look at this line up. We have a squad, use it.
Losing just like winning becomes a habit. At least consider moving Root to opener in absence of Roy.
No excuses, just not performing.

Nothing wrong with England, Aussie bowled better on the day
Woakes was unlucky when bowling, a bit more luck and Aussie are two down
Vince is not ODI international but who replaces him in the line up, do you go Curran and get an extra bowler or Foakes who can bat
Pakistan you never know which team will turn up and we hit them on a good day but not brilliant
I still think we will qualify and then it’s two cup finals
Dark horses Pakistan and The Tigers

The game is up IMHO, talented but one dimensional, need to vary their batting sometimes not go Gung Ho every time. Hope they qualify but their spirits are low now, it's going to be very tricky.

Sadly i agree.

I cant see us beating India (2nd) and New Zealand (3rd) on the back of that performance. Especially, considering we lost to Pakistan (6th) and Sri Lanka 9th).

We really need to raise our game, i doubt it, but If we do...Bloody Fantastic!!

As Shrimpers, we are all used to "living in hope".

All the best lads.

I don't think the game is up, it's tough now but I think we have just as much chance as of the 4th spot as Pakistan or Bangladesh, maybe more.

Yesterday we were beaten fair and square.
The Sri Lanka game I think the pitch was a leveller.
The Pakistan game was close and Pakistan put on their performance of the tournament.

The loss of Roy in the last 2 games has certainly affected us. If he isn't fit for the next game then I think we need to rule him out and bring in Hales, either that or somehow get Vince injured.

I’ve watched a couple of New Zealand games now and thought they were very lucky against South Africa, they have us and the Aussies left to play, I think we will beat them, the Aussies should but will possibly play a weakened team..if anything I think New Zealand are in the most danger now of missing out ...England v New Zealand could be an eliminator !!

Just a side track thought but who has most impressed you this world cup?
Batsman, Bowler or team or all three.
For me Mitchell Starc is probably the number one pace bowler in world cricket and will be a handful in the upcoming Ashes series.
On the plus side, I think Joe Root has had a very good world cup so far.

Archer has proven his class in first major tournament, W Indies Cottrell is a classy player, but one under the radar is The Tigers Shakib Al Hasan if Aussie or English we would purring about him

And of course the King of ODI Kohli utter class and love watching him either batting or his fielding

second vote for Shakib Al Hasan, 3rd in the top runs chart having played one less game than the 2 above him and only 24 runs behind top. Also in the top 10 wicket takers!

My take on it so far:

  1. England can't seem to modify their natural game to accommodate the pitches and the situation. You don't need to hit six after six when you're chasing less than 300 on a slow wicket.
  2. It might be worth considering batting first, i.e. base the decision on the conditions, not what you have always done.
  3. We're missing Hales. But, if we screw up and don't make the semis then so be it. I'd rather we did that and stuck to our principles by dropping Hales than compromised our principles and got through.
  4. I suspect there are a number of England players that are less than 100% fit, and that may be affecting team selection decisions.
  5. Personally i'd seriously consider dropping Moeen Ali. I don't remember the last time he contributed significantly with the bat. However, that may be because he's playing too far down the order.

My take is that England have modified their approach and its been to their detriment. Including Archer alongside Wood has improved the bowling but lengthened the tail but the main issue is at the top of the order where Vince has fundamentally changed England's approach. England's successful run of the last four years has been based upon the England openers taking the game to the opposition and putting them on the back foot and then not relenting. We had a battery of three aggressive openers and if one wasn't in form we could switch them out. Now because of Roy's injury and the ECB's fear of bad publicity we have an out of form Bairstow and an out of his depth Vince. This makes it harder for incoming middle order batsmen because the field is more up and there aren't the easy singles to help ease them in nor an in form partner to ease their burden by hitting some boundaries so the incoming batsmen are under pressure to raise the run-rate from the go.

Vince has been in for three games and the only one England scored over 300 against was Afghanistan, which was the only won we won. With Roy in the side England posted 300+ every time (other than the WIndies when we chased down 213 with 17 overs to spare). Even when we included Vince in the top 3 in the warm-up we lost to Australia!

The trouble is even if Roy is fit will he be in form having missed this time in the middle? It's a huge gamble. If he isn't fit I'd get Moeen or someone like Tom Curran to open as a pinch-hitter and I'd contemplate finding a place for Tom Curran regardless to lengthen the batting order and play to our strengths which was to bat deep and bat aggressive.

Ali seems to be lacking confidence, a shot at the opener role could be the end of him

Young Curran not sure opener but could be useful 3 - 5 to score quick runs and decent bowler to have in your side

Can never understand why Northeast did not get the spot over Vince, does not seem to be in the plans, wonder if he has done something wrong to upset selectors, cannot be run scoring problem

A mention for Pakistan's Babar Azam

Not quite sure what Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib was thinking of when bowling the 50th (and final over), especially after conceding 20 runs off the 46th over.
