Coventry after Barney !!!

Even ignoring the contract situ, does anyone think he is worth anything like that? Seems like madness to me and cannot see Leeds fans being happy when (with the greatest respect), Barnard turns up instead of Beckford...

Yes, I do.

Leeds are touting Beckford for around £2-3million, and he is in the same situation as Barnard with his deal running out in the summer. Thats madness.

Barnard is a very good striker, with a happy habit of finding the back of the net. I'm surprised at the £500K that is being mentioned, but if he still had plenty of time on his contract I'd be looking for closer to £1m.

Interestingly, this is a comment I made on 606 only yesterday in response to someone asking about the rumours of £250k:

£250k is cheap as far as I'm concerned. Ok, he only has 6 months left on his contract here but I would hope for at least another £100k on top of that although when I see some of the money that's been paid for some players, he should really be a half a mill player.

Coventry can **** off lol. They've got quality strikers, Leon Best, Clinton Morrison, Freddy Eastwood. If barney goes coventry which he most probably won't, i reckon he won't start that's for sure. he'd get a few games and few goals but that's about it. Stay barney stay!

This is where the £500k rumour came from;

Ok looks like two the clubs that were supposedly interested in Barnard are about to sign other strikers:-.
Coventry are on the verge of signing Stockport ace Carl Baker.
Norwich are closing in on the signing of Stockport forward Oli Johnson.
So we can almost but these two rumours to bed.

Stockport have been resigned to losing Baker since September, a dead cert for relegation now, if they wern't already!

Whilst Barnard has been a fantastic striker for us and we would be stuffed without him, I feel that some people are slightly building him up too much.

If indeed Beckford does leave Leeds I would have thought they would be looking at better replacements than Barney bearing in mind they will be looking at promotion to the top flight next year.

Also figures of 500k-1m seem over the top to me especially with only 6 months left on the contract. A fine player yes but I would say that he isn't that pacey, not devastating in the air and not that skilful a la Freddy.

I doubt that too many Championship strikers of any note would want to drop down a division, even for six months, so they'll be looking at the best of the lower leagues which Lambert aside would be Barney. At 350-500k he would be a bargain for a club with their resources and pulling power..

But give him the ball in front of goal, and he very rarely misses. One thing I noticed in the Hartlepool game, we had 2 offsides given against us (rightly I might add) when Barney was clean through, but he finished them both absolutely clinically, but we very rarely get the ball to him in that way, a lot of his goals are from balls coming across the box rather than through the middle.

I have thought this for a long time. Don't get me wrong, I think he's was a good buy and I'm very pleased to have him here. I'm not convinced he has the talent to play at a higher level though, I think he'd be a very average championship striker

he's not particularly quick and not particularly strong. he has that knack of being in the right place at the right time, however I agree... I'm not sure if he'd cut it in the CCC (yet).

I think he is ready for the step up.

Look at our last succesful striker in Eastwood. He went up to the Championship with us, scored a dozen or so goals and moved on to Wolves and Coventry. Know, I reckon we all agree that Eastwood is probably the better player, yet he has struggled in the Championship since us.

He is a completely different striker to Barnard though. Eastwood made goals out of nothing, he created his own space, could beat 3/4 players and rifle one in the top corner from 25 yards with ease. Barnard needs chances created for him. He scored a great goal against Bristol Rovers from outside the box, but apart for that, I would imagine all his goals have been scored inside the box. He is more of a predator, a goal poacher in the mould of Francis Jeffers. Yes, he does some fantastic work outside the box with his flick ons, bringing others into play, and hard work, but he is know for his finishing skills.

If Barnard is given chances in the Championship, I'm confident he'd stick them away with ease like he does for us.

When Eastwood went into the Championship, he played like he did in League One and Two and thought he could do it all on his own, which he couldn't because of the better quality of defenders. He has never been a goal poacher. I bet he has a high percentage of goals from outside the box.

I think Barnard would be a hit in the Championship BUT he'd have to be in a side that create chances for him like a QPR or a West Brom with their array of attacking threat.
