Chris Powell MBE

Well, I would say he was the best player to pull on a Southend shirt.
But to justify that, he was consistently good throughout the 248 games over six years he played for Blues.
Fans will argue there were better players: Stanley Victor Collymore, for example, but he was only here for nine months as a player - and CP won more England caps.
Chris is also a very nice guy. Rarely without a smile, and always ready for a word to fans and friends.
I told him I was a little apprehensive when he came back as boss: We all knew what he was stepping into, but he reckoned he always had a soft spot for Roots Hall and couldn't resist the call.
Well pleased he received this honour.

Really chuffed to hear this news, absolute top man.

Speaking personally if Chris had not raised the prostate cancer campaign while he was at SUFC I would not be around today.

Because of Chris I discovered I had aggressive Prostate Cancer. Fortunately for me I discovered it early enough to survive it. (Did not have any symptoms}

Six years on still here, forever grateful.

Fantastic post, likewise my Friend💕🦐⚽

Great news for Chris.
Did he get the award for services to acting , for his brilliant part in the Ted Lasso series? 🤔😉

Always great to see one of football's good guys get the plaudits they deserve.
Chris Powell MBE said he was “ecstatic” to be honoured for services to football by the Princess Royal after a ceremony at Windsor Castle yesterday.

The 55-year-old said: “I’ve been awarded for what I love doing and that’s football – playing, coaching, managing, being involved in the game in general.”

It was an honour to spend yesterday at Windsor Castle with my mum, my wife Sophia, and our children, to receive my MBE. I would like to thank everyone who has helped me throughout my life and career. I am truly grateful and humbled.

Asked about the importance of his work supporting grassroots football, the former player said:
“I’ve always recognised that a football club is in the fabric of towns, of cities, and it’s not only when we play there every Saturday, but it’s about the wider community.

“It’s about the fans and engaging with them.
“People look up to us, people look up to players, look up to coaches and managers, and I’ve always felt it’s important to make sure that you’re part of that community.”

Powell played more than 700 matches with clubs including Southend United, Charlton Athletic and Derby County and won five England caps and has coached at many clubs along with the national team and is currently assistant manager at Sheffield Wednesday.

Well done Chris.
