With the hull game looking like being a virtual sell out it almost seems like the huge game coming up on saturday is slipping under the radar. For me this game is the one i am moist about. Could be a real season defining game, a win would send out a clear message as well as instill a shed load of confidence in the boys. A defeat however could change the landscape completely. Personally I would take three points saturday over beating Hull every time. A quick word on the potential line up, I think Thompson surely has to play right back bringing Lenny back into the centre of the park.

Your right of course but we can play chesterfield any time. For the casual fan a chance to beat premier league opposition is a big deal. I'm looking forward to the next 3 as they are all huge for different reasons.

We owe chesterfied and daggers and we have the potential with the hull game to make some serious cash which will keep the club afloat.

Rather a shame that the Cup game didn't come before the Chesterfield clash, then some of the 'glory hunters' may have been tempted to return to see what, as you have pointed out, is a far more important clash, in terms of our season. Ironically, the crux of the matter is surely there; only a hardcore of fans will come to watch League Two football. I've had a quick check and it appears that our crowds for league games this season are averaging in the region of 5500. Looking back at our last stay in League One it was about 7000 and our season in the Championship seemed to attract 9000+ with the limitations of Roots Hall. That is surely why Chesterfield is so much more important, in the essential task of getting out of this awful League and it is also why FF is so important in the long term future of the club.

Would be nice to get between 5500 - 6500 against Chesterfield and then sell out the away tickets for daggers and then 6000 for the Newport game....7 out of the 9 points available would be a good return, the full 9 and I'll wet myself
For the Hull game.....not too worried, always a good few schekels in the bank account but always prefere the league points for me

Saturdays match is MASSIVE !!!!!!! A win would put us above them + right up there in the driving seat for automatic promotion. This is our major target for this year so we should certainly make it a priority. I would be gutted if we stupidly allow the cup to cost us promotion. The money from an extended cup run would be handy , but unless we beat Hull + get a plum live on tv match in round 5 the money gained would be less than the extra income from promotion up to League 1 .

team for Saturdays big 6 pointer :

................................................BENTLEY............................................
LEONARD...............PHILLIPS.....................PROSSER............COKER
..............ATKINSON...................LAIRD..................TIMLIN.................
.................HURST....................CORR..................STRAKER..................

bench:EASTWOOD,WOODROW,CLIFFORD,THOMPSON,AUGER,SMITH,PAYNE

I really don't like building any one game up into a sort of make or break.......the season has 46 games an each is as important as the other. Massive in the sense that we don't want to lose it, if possible, and let a gap open up between Automatic and play-off places. We have five league matches this month and the aim should be for at least ten points (November 13points from 5; December only 5points from 4). A victory would certainly put us in the comfort zone, meaning that we would require three points from Daggers or Newport, to achieve that target. A defeat or draw would necessitate us winning both of the final fixtures of the month.............not impossible.

Given Chesterfield's home form I fully expect them to beat Cup fever.

Or have I missed the point?

Never underestimate Cup fever, reckon it will be a close game and possibly a score draw.

:whistling:

Most of the teams around us will play 2/3 games until now and our next league game against Daggers. I've picked out 3 key games where these teams play each other.

Worst case scenario

Tues 21st - Chesterfield beat Rochdale
Sat 25th - Burton beat Fleetwood
Mon 27th - Fleetwood beat Scunthorpe

Scunthorpe - 53pts (played 28) [WWL]
Chesterfield - 53pts (played 27) [WWW]
Burton - 51pts (played 27) [WW]
--------------------------------------
Fleetwood - 47pts (played 27) [WLW]
Rochdale - 46pts (played 27) [WL]
Oxford - 45pts (played 26) [WW]
Newport - 45pts (played 26) [WW]
--------------------------------------
Southend - 42pts (played 26) [L]

3 points off play-offs with no games in hand over 6th and 7th. A game in hand over 2nd - 5th closing the gap on 3rd place Burton to 6 points.

Best case scenario

Tues 21st - Chesterfield and Rochdale draw
Sat 25th - Burton and Fleetwood draw
Mon 27th - Fleetwood and Scunthorpe draw

Scunthorpe - 54pts (played 28) [WWD]
Burton - 49pts (played 27) [WD]
Chesterfield - 48pts (played 27) [LDW]
--------------------------------------
Rochdale - 47pts (played 27) [WD]
Fleetwood - 46pts (played 27) [WDD]
Oxford - 45pts (played 26) [WW]
Southend - 45pts (played 26) [W]
--------------------------------------
Newport - 45pts (played 26) [WW]

3 points off Chesterfield with a game in hand, along with Oxford.

There are also a couple of games that could prove tricky. Daggers play Newport and Scunthorpe in the next 2 saturdays after already drawing against both 1-1 earlier in the season. In-form Plymouth could take something against Rochdale this weekend. Being prudent, I've just assumed that the higher placed team will win and if Daggers and Plymouth can steal a win or draw then it is a bonus.

Seeing that is it hard to argue that I'd prefer to beat Hull than beat Chesterfield, but the possibility of a big draw in the next round of the cup as well as the money it would bring in does even it up.

Wouldn't let me green ,but a great post. Bottom line all we can do is win as many games as we can between now and the end of the season ,but I suspect that we will end up in the play offs with scunny chesterfied and Burton finishing top 3. I really hope that we can get lucky in a few games and make ground.

It sure is exciting though.

I understand your point, but if I had a choice of 3 points in the league , or beating Hull I will take beating Hull any day of the week . The financial implications could be huge (between £180,000 minimum (crap daw, low crowd, not on TV) to £1,050,000 (arsenal away, on TV assuming same fee as 4th round , sell out, Average £30 ticket), plus the memories (chelsea, Man Utd etc). The Cup is a one off- we can still go up regardless of Saturdays result (and we are going to go up ! :winking:.)

Incidentally the BBC did a poll of Wigan suporters on would they swap going their Cup win with relegation, and the overwhelming majority (everyone!) would take the cup win . I know we are not going to win the FA cup, but we are not going to be relegated either. Football (to me) is all about the memories, and I would take the chance of a big draw, and maybe a cup upset against three points any day of the week

Think this thread needs a poll.

Joking, but seriously it would be interesting to see who would vote beating Chesterfield or beating Hull.

why do we have to pick?!
but if I were PB i'd play strongest team on Saturday then make some key changes (i'd start Laird, Gomis and Woodrow) against Hull before our top 11 again in the other 6 pointer this month the following Friday...

Do you think that Hull will play there strongest team .

Fully understand the financial implications of the cup, but league football is the be all and end all of our sport, missing out on promotion could have much greater long term financial impact than not getting a one off payout.

I take three points everyday.

Indeed. And if we make, say, half a million by beating Hull just think what it could do for us in the League.

It's gotta be Cup fever. Consider this - we beat Hull, then draw and beat Stevenage, Rochdale and then those muppets Ipshite in the semi, to set up a final v Man City where I concede we might then lose but as City will be in the top four we will qualify for Europe. THen it's off to the continent with 17 games all the way to the Europa League final.

I'd take another season of League Two for that.

Here we go ...................
