Che in at right back

Thats one way of looking at it I suppose :)

yeah it is important to remember that whilst che is a solid dependable player, he definitely isn't championship class.. he was probably the weakest player in our championship-winning season and his decision making and execution leaves a lot to be desired

He really wasn't that solid anyway. The LDV game possibly gets referred to too much but Wilson was ripped apart by Bullock that day as he was every time we came up against a decent right-winger which fortunately wasn't very often in the lower leagues. Che would have been destroyed by the calibre of player that we faced last season.

I know i missed the away game (was it Sheff Wed?) where Cheese apparently got taken apart last season, but the home game against Palace was more than enough for me as a reminder of his flaws. up against Paul Ifill, he backed off constantly and never got close to him, obviously terrified that he didn't have the pace to keep up with him. Being so clearly lost in the headlights, he basically invited Palace to double up on him and cause a lot of problems- after about 10 minutes they had clearly cottoned on and were aiming the majority their attacks down that flank.

It's not just that he doesn't have pace, it's that he doesn't have a plan B if he comes up against anyone who does. Hammell isn't the strongest in the tackle, but i think part of that is that, being better at the rest of a defenders job, he doesn't need to make as many. I'd also echo the points about distribution, and suggest that anyone who thinks Che deserves a 7 for control has a view more rose-tinted than TTK's worst nightmares last season..

Bullock was as good as the calibre of player we faced last year , he played in the prem and also the pitch at the Millienium stadium is a lot bigger than most and Wilson was isolated by Gower (IIRC) who didn't cover back at all.

Agreed though it did look bad but lets see what he can do at right back on his right foot and then judge him.

Like i said in an early post , i can't imagine Barrett being anyway near his best if he was asked to play a right sided role.

I must have said this about 30 time on this page, i honestly think Che is underated by us, solid, good in the tackle, comfortable in the air, etc. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with finding a 5 meter pass to Maher or Gower, who can do something a little more creative. Certainly better than trying to make a 30 meter pass and just giving it away.

Che isnt (and prob never will be) Championship class - but League 1 he'll be fine.

The thing about Che's passing is that whilst he may more often than not find a Southend player more often or not that Southend player has to go back to receive the pass, or the ball will be underhit and the player will have to wait for the pass, or he'll play someone into trouble and that player will have to get rid of the ball quickly and often just lump it forward. A simple 10 yard pass can still find a blue shirt and be a bad pass. With someone who can time, weight and spot a pass much better than Che it makes a lot of difference to the team.

You can say it 3 million times and Ill not agree with it :)

Che made far too many mistakes and was unable to cope with tricky wingers.

He was a strong tackler, but a lot of the time wasnt in a position to get the tackle in.

He could make 5 yard passes, but far too many times lost the ball or underhit a backpass.

I do agree though at league one he will do as a squad player as he can at least play both full back positions.

I'm no fan of Lewis Hunt but both Simon Francis and him are far better than Che at Right Back. Che has good heading skills and he played well going forward with Gower in front of him but other than that we spent most of those two promotion seasons with our hearts in our mouths whenever we needed him to defend.

But... Che is ideal as a squad player who will play in a variety of positions apparently without much complaint. And the one thing I don't recall ever faulting him for is effort. I'll just be worried if we have to depend on him too often or for too long this season.

I'd agree with that, but Wilson has played almost all of his games for Southend at left-back so that's all we really have to judge him on.
