Post-Match Thread and Ratings Charlton Athletic 1-0 Southend United

Bailey - big fat 0. You are a **** of the highest order, bloody disgrace to celebrate the goal by taunting our fans.

Playing Devils Advocate here, why shouldn't he? The same fans have been taunting him. I agree the way Bailey probably engineered his move left a bad taste, hence the abuse, but I think fans get a bit precious when they get a bit of taunting back. Just a thought.

Wasn't necessary at all Harry, and have seen players booked for it.

Maybe so,but lets not forget,he's not only a greedy ****,but ginger yuk.

probably the best i've seen us play this season. On the one hand that's encouraging, on the other it's somewhat worrying given how few clear-cut chances we created (albeit against one of the league's better teams). Francis and McCormack continue to struggle to find blue shirts, and i wouldn't pick Malone ahead of Herd when both are fit. of the other loanees Morrison looked solid, while Jabo really struggled to make an impression. Laurent great to watch but ran into blind alleys too often- to be fair to Francis, it didn't make his game much easier when Laurent spent most of the 2nd half wandering inside.

Charlton didn't look great (by all accounts the home fans thought it was one of their worst performances this season), but look like one of those well organised teams who usually prosper in this league. Bailey plays a more rigid role in front of the back 4 than he did for us, and did really well to break up a couple of attacks.

It may not have been necessary, but if you are receiving shed loads of abuse it's natural to react. And yes players have been booked and sent off in the past, and it would suggest the ref yesterday didn't see a lot wrong with it.

:D Can't argue with that.

You can't criticise Bailey for raising his fists and shouting a bit after our fans had been singing some pretty vile songs about him. He could've done a lot worse (Adebayor). I suppose it raises the old argument whether fans should be able to say what they want when they've paid their money and not expect players to react.

McCormack - 8, completely overshadowed Bailey, great energy and great discipline on the whole. Took the game by the scruff in the 2nd half and reminded us all what a good player he can be.

Hmm....

As for all the same old reviews on Francis, he's banned for the Hartlepool game so hopefully a game off will sort his head out.

And as for the we did alright and were unlucky nonsense coming from Tilly and a few others, it's getting tedious. If we have many more of these games we'll be relegated, simple as. We've lost 5 of our last 6 games and haven't scored in those 5 defeats. We're sinking and fast, and excuses stop needing to be made I'm afraid.

That t**t Parkinson's view on the Bailey chanting:

Nicky Bailey was given a rough ride by Southend's travelling fans - supporters who used to chant his name at Roots Hall prior to his switch to The Valley - and Parkinson was surprised to see his captain given stick.

"I was amazed about that,” he said. "I thought he'd get a standing ovation from them. They made a handsome profit on him and he was their player of the year. He gave them exceptional service and I was astounded they criticised a player who has gone on to better himself.
"Young Jimmy Walker came off the bench for them and our fans stood up and applauded him when he's someone who didn't play a single first-team game for Charlton.
"Barnet's fans gave Nicky a great reception recently, and Southend should have done the same. When Nicky pulled on a Southend shirt, he gave them absolutely everything.
"You can't blame him for taking the opportunity to play for Charlton and also, the club accepted the fee, gave them permission to talk to Charlton and that gave them money to go forward. But it won't bother him one iota as he's a tough old character.”

Yes Phil, we were all delighted with the way he hung our club out to dry and refused to play for us. I'm sure you'll be thinking the same when he does it to you.

He has a point.

Parkinson like some other managers, players and media you haven't a ****ing clue,Bailey **** on us,you got rid of Walker,no comparison at all.

Agree - he had every right to give it the biggun back - I would certainly have done the same and in a way I would have been disappointed if he hadn't - there's something wrong with you if you can soak up the kind of stick we were giving him and not give any back.

He had the last laugh of course - we played lots of nice football but at the end of the day we can't defend and we are completely devoid of ideas going forward. It's going to be a long winter.

Apart from that I dont think there's too much to worry about then really.

Just pointing out to you that my son informed me when I got home that on Sporting Life's live match reporting thing, which if you've used it, you'll know they report the player having the greatest influence on the game - the "key" player - every 10 minutes, Macca was the key player 3 times in the second half, so not just my clouded opinion.

He has a point.

Not really. Plenty of players have left southend to go onto better things and have had good receptions when they've played us. The difference being that they didn't act like a spoilt brat to the detriment of the club in the same fashion as Bailey.

oh well, case closed then. Presumably tilly should stop bothering going to the games and just watch it on the internet.

I know there's a lot of Macca bashing on here and normally I would say hold on he is giving his all for us and putting on the shirt week in week out but he did one thing to really **** me off Saturday. Not his inept passing, ridiculously poor finishing or poor vision, but his attitude towards his teammates.

Don't know if anyone else noticed him screaming at Scott Malone at the end of the game but it wound me up something chronic. He's a young lad, he has come in on loan and is trying to help out the team and it seems to me he has the right attitude. Macca's main issue with Scott seemed to be him having a shot at the death and missing the target....... well at least he was willing to have a pop at goal unlike the rest of the squad, we dominated the game but no player seemed willing to pull the trigger and wanted to walk it in the net. Scott has a go and got an ear bashing for it, get over yourself Macca it's not like you were ever going to score!

The interviews on blues player highlight the attitude and the determination he is bringing to the squad. Tilly and Barrett when asked about the next two matches said "each game is as important as the next" quite right lads and we need composure in the team as well, Scott says "6 points nothing else will do". a bit of fighting talk from the camp is refreshing to say the least.

Now before you tell me how wrong you think I am I am aware of all the fumbled passes Malone made and how ******* awful all his free kicks were, I already know. But I was just unhappy with what I saw after.

Rant over, go ahead and tell me why I am wrong.

My ratings
Mildenhall 6 - came for a couple of crosses competently, good distribution but the communication was lacking at times.
Francis 5 - having started the season so brightly he's gone off the boil big time. Still looks an absolute defensive liability. I suppose it would all have been forgiven had that free-kick dipped under the bar.
Malone 5 - not his day, but I think he's a better player than that and would benefit from getting to know his team mates
Barrett 6 - probably the pick of the defence
Morrison 5 - needs to be stronger in the air, he gets out-muscled too easily but I suppose this will come with time, something we haven't got as his loan is nearly up
McCormack 4 - absolutely atrocious first half when he was a complete passenger when I'm not sure he made a single tackle or forward pass or run. He improved second half (esp after Brushy had a go at him), but his passing is absolutely killing us. For the love of God, put some pace on your passes. Numerous moves are breaking down as soon as he get involves. O'Keefe has got to be worth a try.
Grant 7 - MOM Bossed the first 15 minutes and was a driving force when he surged forward, but Charlton had Bailey performing a similar role.
Moussa 5 - came closest to scoring with a cross and a snapshot narrowly wide, but still off-colour when starved of possession and then options once he has the ball.
Laurent 5.5 - occasionally mesmeric, but playing him is more like playing a 4-3-3 because he offers so little to the midfield. I think his best position is sub.
Barnard 5.5 - another player looking out of form. Should have buried that chance, but it looked an absolute world class save.
Ibhere 5 - looked hesitant.

Overall I thought it was an utterly demoralising display. Not so much because the players were playing poorly, but because I saw such little room for improvement given the constraints of the players available. Defeat looked inevitable as our defence didn't look secure and attacking play was anaemic.

I'm not even that big a Sawyer fan (I think that even if he sorts out his off the field issues, he's probably more champion$hite than premier$hite quality) but there is currently a huge Sawyer sized hole in our midfield. Grant was doing a sterling job in the holding role, but we so desperately need a play-maker in the middle of the park to get the ball moving about and someone who can break forward. There were a couple of occasions when we had the ball on the right-wing and the two Francis (I wonder what the collective noun is for that: a cack of Francises?) had no other Southend players within 30 yards of them. The non-holding central-midfielder has got to be getting closer to them to provide an option - instead they had no option but to play it back: Laurent to Simon and then back to Morrison.

Completely agree, Mark Gower made it no secret that he wanted to play at the highest possible level and he conducted himself professionally and with dignity, should he play at the hall again, he'll get a hereos reception from me.

Agree 100% with Parkinson.

Let's compare two players, who we shall call Player A and Player B

Player A single-handedly drives a team into the play-offs with his excellence. He is then sold to a far bigger club, plying their trade in a higher division for a substantial profit
Player B is an error prone defender who signs for a near record transfer fee and is part of a defence that gets his club relegated in his first season because they ship 3 goals every home game. In his second season the defence is the difference between the team being automatically promoted and only reaching the play-offs (where they ship 5 goals in the second leg).

Player B is on a far more lucrative contract than Player A, but Player B refuses to sign a new deal and leaves the club on a Bosman having cost the team over £1m (and their championship status).

Yet despite the club's subsequent financial woes it is Player B who is feted as a hero, and Player A, the far superior player who netted the club a substantial profit in addition to his superb performances on the pitch, who is branded greedy and a Judas.

There's something not quite right there.

Must you take every opportunity possible to have a dig at "player A" ?!?! It's becoming tedious and predictable.
There was no one player who took us into the play offs, just as there was no one player who cost us our championship status. Out of interest, it's been well documented about how much Clarke cost us over three years, but it was his goal at Chelsea that earned a lucrative reply on TV and in front of a full house!! Just how much did that header make the club?
The reason for Bailey getting dog's abuse was because of the way he left the club - as I'm sure you well know. Clarke may have let his contract run out and then line his pockets with a move to Huddersfield, but he continued to give 100% effort right up until the final game of the season.
Bailey deserved a move to a bigger club in a higher division because of performances alone and if he had kept his mouth shut until he left us before saying "sorry to be leaving...great times at Southend, etc" then he would have been treated with the respect that Clarke received. Bailey didn't, acted terribly and got a lot of stick...thats football!
