What annoys me most about these proposals is the patronising and cavalier attitude displayed by those in power. If there is a problem with the national team, then address it by mucking about with the premier league, not by picking on the ‘little’ clubs further down the chain, diluting and diminishing what we play for and turn up to watch week in, week out. It doesn’t matter what your feelings towards the JPT actually are, it’s the principle of the proposed changes that’s important. I don’t care if the prem ‘B’ teams may or may not be any good, that’s hardly the point – I fail to see why our level of football should be considered fair game for any random format tinkering that someone stuck in an office somewhere thinks may improve the national side’s chance in a lottery every four years. I support England when we play, and like to see the country do well, but it’s Southend I go to watch home and away, rain or snow.

Club or country for me? Not even close.

Wish the FA would just show some balls, and if the national side needs improving, then take steps at the appropriate level – start mucking about with the big money prem if you dare, and leave us alone.

Allowing this is the thin end of the wedge, and the years trial is clearly simply a palliative to ease our concerns before formal adoption no matter how well it’s deemed to have gone. Very disappointed that the club have supported this proposal.

I'm sure all this has been covered before, but I'm late to this party, and as this is one of the few things in my entire life that actually genuinely ****es me off, I'm venting about it anyway. As you were.

very well said - agree with every word . Also as I said earlier, if its all about helping the national team then I expect to see an U21 squad only consisting of English Players. What are the chances of that happending - absolutely none.

It saddens me that people are actually debating or getting excited about going to a Premiersh!te ground. There's a principle at stake here regarding the identity of lower league clubs.

Some interesting changes to the JPT / LDV / EFL Trophy after the recent announcements....

Football fans have reacted angrily to a plan to allow Premier League clubs to field Under-23 teams with up to four overage players in the EFL Trophy next season. Radical plans to revamp the competition, previously known as the Johnstone's Paint Trophy for a decade, were announced earlier this month. But the decision to expand the now sponsor-less competition to a 64-team format comprising teams from League One, League Two and 16 "category-one" academies was far from unanimous. Several English Football League clubs said it was an attempt to smooth the way for top-flight B teams joining the lower leagues. This idea was first floated by outgoing Football Association chairman Greg Dyke in 2014 but was heavily criticised by EFL clubs and fans' groups. One of those, Against League 3 (AL3), has already rejected the EFL Trophy plans. "The EFL and its clubs are well aware football fans do not, and have never, supported these plans," said campaign manager James Cave. "AL3 has regularly canvassed supporters and sought their opinion, as have organisations like Supporters Direct. "Our studies show over 75% of lower league fans are against the implementation of B teams. "Yet the B teams idea is a mere symptom of a far larger problem in English football: supporters are unrepresented by our FA, our leagues and often our clubs. "Following England's defeat to Iceland, it has never been more necessary for fans to question what is really being done to our sport." These questions are bound to spread now that EFL chief executive Shaun Harvey has revealed invites to compete in next season's EFL Trophy will be sent to the 15 Premier League clubs with category-one academy status and Newcastle United, as they finished higher in the league pyramid last season than the five clubs with category-one status in the EFL. If any of those clubs turn down the chance to join the competition - which will feature 16 groups of four, arranged on a north/south basis, before becoming a knock-out tournament with the winners of the northern and southern halves meeting at Wembley - Norwich City, the next-best finisher last season, will be invited. But contrary to what was discussed at the EFL AGM in Portugal three weeks ago, the invited clubs will be able to field U23 teams, not U21s, with three outfield overage players and a goalkeeper. The Press Association has seen a letter from Harvey to League One and Two clubs that said: "The PL development league (to be known as Premier League 2) will from next season operated as an U23 league rather than U21s. "On this basis, we will adopt this eligibility criteria for the EFL Trophy. "Their criteria also includes the ability to include three overage players and a goalkeeper in their team." Harvey also said penalties will be used to settle draws in the group games, with the successful team earning an extra point. Teams will be able to use three substitutes from 18-man squads and knockout games tied after 90 minutes will also go straight to penalties. Harvey added that scrapping extra time will be reviewed for the semi-finals and final "if there is a compelling or commercially attractive reason" to do so, and if the additional 30 minutes was called for a fourth substitute would be allowed.

It gets worse. Presumably the PL can in future decide their development squads don't have any age restriction, and we end up with B teams through the back door.

Exactly this.

Sounds like every update we receive, seems to be more and more in favour of the Premier league B teams!

I wonder whats going to be proposed in the next update?? it wouldn't surprise me at all, if they decided to scrap the age cap altogether! just to put the final nail in the lower league clubs coffins!!

the new rules seem a bit odd.. an extra point for winning on pens, extra subs when the match goes to extra time..

What else will they change.. I'm thinking that the club mascot should have to play 90 minutes, goalkeepers cant wear gloves and teams can only score from kick off. :thump:

I have just read through the changes to be implemented.

Please tell me where on earth they find people to come up with these ideas.
There seems very little point in participating in this farce of a competition.

Speechless truly speechless :omg:

What exactly is the point of bringing in these changes and what is it supposed to achieve, other than total fan-indifference
to the tournament and a likelehood of pathetic attendances? I'm completely lost, or is it the EFL hierarchy who have lost
the plot? Little wonder that with such cretins in control of the game (in tandem with the old fogeys at the FA) our national game is falling apart.

Typical example of Premier league bullying. Common sense says they knew all of these "changes" before they went in to negotiate. The EFL should go back and say " I know we said £1 million, but we have decided actually it's £5million.

even if you don't give a **** about the competition lower league fans should be furious at how the PL is conducting itself

Yep think we should boycott the whole thing!
We need a "will Griggs" type chant that all football league clubs can use which expresses our disgust. Perhaps sung at every ground on the 23 rd minute of the first match. Not sure if that has ever been done before

actually I am going to contact supporters direct and make a suggestion

NO way, B team from the EPl
repeat until throat dry.

im sure someone can think of something much beter

Quelle surprise. Just going to be a Premier League play think so the transfer they erronously made can play. Tragic but ezpected after England were knocked out.
