Centenary Match

Prodigal Son

Manager
Did anyone else notice in Friday's Echo that the Portsmouth match on the 26th July is apparently the Centenary match?

So a 100 years gets celebrated on a Wednesday night, and although Prem opposition not exactly top notch is it?

Thanks to the club who told me it would be 22nd or 29th, and thanks to the couple of Trust members who kept telling me they were absolutely sworn to secrecy re: opposition.

All I wanted was a date so I could book a holiday.

It was towards the back of the sports section in the Echo and the club don't actually see it of enough importance to post on the OS.

Still nothing on Official Site. Not exactly the big game everyone was expecting, can't see the crowd being that big. That's the first week of the school summer holidays as well.

We were we told it was going to be the 29th July and that date has been kept free. We obviously couldn't get any big Prem opposition to come and play us.

Remember, it is The Echo that have reported this...

Dont believe it, until you read it on the OS.

If it is Portsmouth I for one will be bitterly dissapointed. Whilst I am immensly proud of what Uncle Ron and the management at The Blues have acheived over the last three seasons, after a 100 years of up and downs and especially with it coinciding with our promotion to the CCC, if this is true this is something that's going upset a lot of proud supporters.

You'd have thought the club would have REALLY pushed the boat out to ensure that the centenery game was something to remember for everyone but I can see this being perceived as just another pre season friendly.

Don't take frustrations out on those two Trust members who were sworn to secrecy. They too will be just as hacked off as anyone else if this is true and after all they were only privy to information supplied by the club at private meetings.

Well i for one am another dissapointed fan. I agree we should be looking to bring a better side down to cap our centenery celebrations.
However with many big prem sides with many players on world cup duty im sure that it will be a problem for them to field big full strength line ups for this date.
Also if we were to play Spurs Arsenal West Ham etc im sure we would find it difficult to accomodate all the true blues followers into the ground due to the amount of fair weather fans of the above teams seeing it as a chance to watch there side locally.
I would much rather have seen a good quality Spanish or Italian side turn out or how about either celtic rangers or hearts?
Has enough thought gone into this game i really dont know?

Having been told it would be Saturday 22nd or 29th, Wednesday is disappointing. Even if I had been in the country midweek matches are difficult to get to. I am not a big fan of friendlies but had hoped this would be a special occassion.

I would have flown back mid holiday to see it but won't be doing that now.

When I did speak to the club they said the main objective was to fill the ground. I am sure Pompey will bring a few even for a friendly but they are not exactly guaranteed to pull in 8,000+ Shrimpers in July.

Aplogies to the two Trust members .

Hold on, The OS reported Pompey as a friendly at Home when they announced the preliminary friendlies, then went on to say the centenary match would be seperate...

If, however, plans have changed and the Pompey game on Wednesday night is the Centenary Match... I'm sure i won't be the only one to be hugely disapointed. What a way to celebrate the anniversary of the club

Personally I dont have a copy of last Fridays Echo to hand and all I did was lift this from another forum. It has been known for the Echo to get it's facts completely wrong so I'm going to wait and see. I just wanted to get a feel for peoples opinions and it's a given that certain members of the Blues read some of the posts on here so should it be true they will know the reaction of the supporters.

Personally, I think Chris at the Echo has dropped a bollock here - adding two and two but getting precisely nothing.

Worry ye not, not yet anyway...

And another serious post goes down hill rapidly as the mates banter kicks in, closely followed by, he took the bait, etc.

Back to the serious stuff, at least it's not West Ham.

well, that's awful, quite frankly. maybe next centenary the club might get their fingers out and do something a bit more meaningful for the fans.

No, we just get left with Harry Redknapp for our centenary match

If that the best the club do, then Iam disappointed about this, if anyone think a game will be on Wednesday, then the match would be on 26th July. Southend need do better than Pompey.
