Post-Match Thread and Ratings Bury 1-1 Southend United

Evening Echo

The News
GAVIN Tomlin continued his fine scoring sequence to secure Southend United a 1-1 draw at League One Bury in the second round of the FA Cup this afternoon.

Currently on the 'metrolink' towards Manchester.

Have to say overall it was a good display and we very nearly grabbed a victory at the death.

We perhaps deserved to be behind at half time. They converted one penalty and Cresswell could arguably have been guilty of conceding another. Tomlin's goal came out of nowhere, but from 150 yards away it looked superb.

Second half we were immense. The work rate was phenomenal, real end-to-end stuff. We didn't really test their keeper too much, but the momentum certainly felt like it was with us and I felt we were going to get a goal. We so nearly did. So did theyjust minutes before...and perhaps they too will feel disappointed not to win.

Standout player for me was Laird whose workrate was incredible, special mention to Timlin as well who is a superb player when at his best. The weak links for me were those who don't normally feature: Freddy and Martin who were both largely ineffective.

And the fans definitely deserve a mention today: a long trip and freezing cold but the atmousphere was probably the best I've bseen this season.

I think we're on the same train. I agree with the above. I also think that Benyon gave us the energy that Freddie (Fredy?) doesn't appear to possess, and we were able to move the ball quicker when he came on. I liked Tomlin even when he wasn't scoring. Now, though, he's a monster. Oh, and I thought they targeted Barker, and he stood up to it. He's also got a great cross on him. Good second half, bloody cold.

Just back and I have to say us fans were the nuts today. From the excellent tribute to Mitchell Cole to that epic second half "Blue Army" chant (with some great dad dancing down the front)... it was fantastic. But what was up with their support, got to be the quietest home fans I have ever seen...seemed only interested in the throw in's being taken from the right place...other than that they sat in silence...weird

As for the game it was quite tight and very open in the second half, almost like no one wanted a replay. Tomlin took his goal well and the double hitting of the posts at the end was very unlucky.

I thought Tomlin, Laird, Timlin, Cresswell and Smith played very well but the midfield looked very lightweight with both Martin and Hurst in the team.

And OMG, is BBBC now really 4th choice of our permanent strikers. I could not believe that Freddy started ahead of him (he looked lazy, didn't offer himself that much as an outlet for a pass and was no goal threat all game apart from one weak long range shot). And then we replace him with Benyon, I just don't get it. The poor lad is just not up to it...he's the best chaser of a ball that is a lost cause but you have to offer much more than that (even Harry Crawford offered more than that). BBBC comes on for 10 minutes...and we start to look much better in the final third... I think Sturrock got it wrong and Tomlin and BBBC should have started today.

Thought Leonard might have been worth a punt today with 30 minutes to go as Martin is very lightweight defensively and very predictable moving forward as he heads to the touch line and then just runs towards the corner flag before attempting a cross (he has to try to get in behind players). Also we seemed to want to do long throws but Bakers were pretty poor.

All in all a good day out and well done to the fans...let's hope we have a real go against Brentford on Tuesday.

According to BBC Essex Corr has been ill all week and struggling a bit with a back injury. Otherwise he probably would of started. Dissapointed with Eastwood, get a chance and doesn't really take it again.

Yeah, heard that too, he'd had sickness and diarrhoea during the week and I think we ALL know how that makes you feel!

Sad to hear about Freddy, seems a real shadow of himself. Can see Martin and Benyon going in Jan to free up some budget for Laird and Britt/Tamika.

It's a shame about Martin. I think he's got skill but, listening to the radio at least, it seemed every time he touched the ball, nothing ever came of it. OK, I know the radio is no substitute to being there as you don't know about his off-the-ball movement/contribution.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere but Freddy was poor yesterday but you have to remember he played with Mitchell Cole both at Southend and at Grays and the news would have probably hit him pretty hard.

Well done Blues, and great support, takes me back to my long days on the road supporting our great team. Tough games coming up. COYBB

Yes, I thought that too. Probably not the best decision to start him under the circumstances although there was probably a part of him that wanted to do it for Mitchell. Maybe Benyon should have started? I know Corr was doubtful to start as he'd had S&D during the week.

Fair play but what's his excuse for the rest of the season so far when he has been on the pitch?
