7.5k ?!?!?!?!??!!?!?!?!?

That cant be true surely. Thats double what we would have paid anyone in the Championship.

7.5 k plus, could end up to 10 k with add ons , initial offer was for 6 k I believe

Wow - if true, that's going to upset a few of the other established players and also would suggest that this should be the range that Lenny is looking for.

Wonder how we can afford that much and therefore can fully understand why the club would be reticent about making it a 3 year deal rather than 2.

Heart says YES PLEASE SIGN HIM as he is real quality, but my head though is not so sure if these amounts are accurate.

Peter Clarke cost a £1million don't you know!

As there is no transfer fee then even 7.5k works out to 780,000 over 2 years so would equate to a player on £3,000 per week with a £450,000 transfer.

Still huge money for us.

We havent signed many players around that price mark. Only Mike Marsh and Gary Poole spring to mind...

I'm surprised anyone knows what salary he's been offered. I have a top contact in the club, and even he doesn't know. It's normally confidential, as not to upset other people/players at the club.

Whenever we sign a big player we get told they are on massive amounts.

Best one was Freddie Eastwood being on 5k a week from "someone in the stand", when in fact he was on 1.7k.

Thats why Im very dubious as to this without knowing who the source is.

It's irrelevant to talk about age unless it's affecting the player.

If you were to talk about a 35 year old MAF then you would suggest he is past it. He looks in better shape than some 20 somethings.

Ferdinand is well aware of his body and managed to jockey along nicely last year. Admittedly he missed games but played well.

I'm sure turner and kightly will be in
the same mould.

Players these days last longer due to more tailored routines of fitness.

If PB says they are fit enough then let's see how it goes.

Of course it's not.

At 31, realistically this is going to be Kightly's last sizeable contract. Yes, he's earned good money elsewhere and the draw of returning home serves us well, but he's not going to be pitching up for peanuts. Whatever Kightly is paid has to be reflected elsewhere in the squad. I'm willing to bet that Kightly's wage won't be far off the combined wages of the six scholars we've signed so far this summer (for the record, I cannot believe for one second he's on £7.5k p/w).

I'm not dismissing Kightly at all, what I'm saying is that this as a squad, for every Kightly that Brown signs concessions have to be made elsewhere to balance the books. If we sign three, four, or five players that will have little re-sell value - your Ferdinands, your Turners, your Coxs - then it becomes transparent that Brown is dealing in the here and now with little thought of how the club might plan for an approaching future without them. It's consistent with Brown's approach ever since he replaced Sturrock.

It's his prerogative to do it that way. After all, he owes little to us and if he spunks £xk on these players and they don't deliver, he'll be out the door quicker than they will. That approach has indeed delivered us a fair amount of success and I'm not trying to be overtly pessimistic about it, but it is definitely worth considering when signings like this present themselves.

I know I was impatient for this deal to happen earlier, and I still am. But I do think we need to chill a bit on wages etc until we actually get the bloke's signature on the dotted line. If he, does sign, I'm hoping it will be enough to convince Lenny that one more year would be worthwhile with us. I doubt we could afford whatever Kightly has or hasn't been offered, and give Len a three year deal at big bucks.

Doubt the numbers are accurate & we are not going to let on. Btw I think gaps between our pay structure and a situation like this are normally dealt with via a nice signing on fee that itself can be staggered- so your on 3k a week but here's a £300k signing on fee- can't pay it up all up front so £100k now and the rest over 2 yrs etc. Then bonuses around promotion etc- many ways to keep appearances correct

there was a rumour that Anton was being paid 8k a week, funded by a director of Southend, again hard to believe

makes you wonder how much he is on really, and Cox?

It's no true. That'd be more than Cox and he won't get more than him.

Also, even if Colorado wanted him they couldn't unless they sold an international, or get another international spot.
