A good starting point would be the 13 shots we had that were off-target. By definition, each one of those was a match-changing error which cost us. Yet he focused on just one that the ref made, which may not have brought a goal anyway, because anyone who was at Accy would know that a penalty does not a certain goal make.

Not when Corr and his feet are involved anyway!!!

A lot of sunday league refs are awful though and considering the players pay their fees through their subs they should really have the decency to learn the rules. I'm not one to scream and shout at refs so when a ref last season gave a free kick outside the area for a ball kicked into my arm from point blank range, I protested calmly without a raised voice and asked "c'mon ref how was I going to get out the way of that? it was no way delibrate" to which he replied "I know, that is why I didn't book you" RIDICULOUS!

The problem with Sunday refs is that there is now too much football. Sunday League, Sceptre League, Vets League, Southend Junior, Essex Ladies and Girls. Thats just in Southend.

Saturday parks, there are more refs than games (I know this, I appoointed them for the last 8 years).

The real problem on the parks is that it is the lowest level of football. Its where we all start, and its where we all finish. So you get guys like me who have done semi pros, 16 year olds doing their first matches, hobby refs and guys in promotion schemes who have to do it by the book. Plus most of the players don't really know the Laws, so that doesn't help either. To referee at any level you must complete a course and pass an exam.

Ref in the above post was possibly correct. Handball is a **** awful Law, and needs a rewrite.....

All I do these days is make sure I talk to everyone so everyone knows what I am doing..... seems to work even if I do make some howlers on occassion.

So it seems Mr. Ward believed he had two reasons to reach the decision that he did, rather than one. Leaving aside whether or not we think he was right, I'd say this seems pretty straightforward. What does Phil not understand about it?

All that means is that the complete fool was wrong twice rather than once.
No point arguing. However, utterly appalling he is nothing will happen and he will be sent out to do the same again.

If clubs rely on cup wins why did Phil make several changes on Tuesday?,He sends out a virtual reserve team and moans when they lose.

That's a fair point.

Walsall made no changes from their team that played on Saturday. We made loads-7 wasn't it?

Who did Walsall get in Round 2 btw?

This is my only real concern of Phil Brown being your manager.
Undeniably he has great experience etc but without wishing to be demeaning, condescending or even patronising to Southend United fans in any way, shape, or form (I happen to now consider myself a follower of the club, dare I say it, a 'new' fan) but there is a reason why he's found himself managing in the fourth division.
He clearly hasn't learned from past mistakes with Hull, in fact he seems to have taken on board a few too many traits from his mentor BFS (who has learned) when commenting on refs in the manner in which he does.
My concerns lie with how his stance will affect decisions given in matches against the club.
It appears to me that, quite rightly, refs do not get intimidated by 'big' names at this level, which is exactly what PB is and it could (wrongly) be used against the team if he keeps bleating on the way he has so often done in the past.
He needs to learn that he can't bully people into getting his own way and should try more to control himself and learn that this type of thing will not influence matters positively.

Every manager comments on refs and to be fair PB comments a lot lot less than most. When presented as here with ineptitude and incompetence on a biblical scale I think its fair he comments and I commend him for retaining his cool like he did- many would have been tempted to be less charitable.

No point arguing.

Quite. Mr. Ward was closer to the incident than you, me & Phil and makes the only decision that matters. However our Manager not only thinks that criticising a referee's work is a worthwhile investment of his time but also seems to believe that he should have some kind of mandate for future complaints. I'm sure we'd both prefer to see this time & effort being invested by Mr Brown in an area where he has a little more influence over the outcome.

We wouldnt have got the same draw, it doesnt work like that, butterfly wings and all that.

If my understanding of the mechanics of the draw is right, we would have had Brighton at home (and Swindon would have had Palace).

All academic of course. Our manager chose to make 7 changes (do professional athletes need a rest after one game) and although the changed side acquitted itself reasonably well, the place in the next round went to the club that took it more seriously.
