Is death worse than life in prison?

Brings us back to the same conversation we were having the other day about Brady. I don't care if being incarcerated for the rest of his life is deemed to be more of a punishment, the guy doesn't deserve to live, he's forfeited every right in the course of his actions, and so, in my opinion, his own life should be taken, he should be executed.

Yes. With life in prison he will at some stage experience moments of happiness or joy.

Not saying you're wrong as I can see both sides on this one, but won't those rare moments of happiness or joy make the far more common moments of despair and solitude far, far more harrowing.

I'd personally find life in a cell in solitary confinement a fate far worse than death.

Safe to assume I think that he won't ever be getting out though.

We will never know. It's an easy cop out.
But, why waste the tax payers money on this ****? I'd rather him be gone.

But he still has the hope of getting out in between 10-21 years time and then re-starting his life. Does he deserve the option?

Depends if you think that actually IS an option. I'm no more of an expert in Norwegian justice than the next man but I really don't think it is. From what I can see, it's a conviction with a minimum sentence from which he will be detained indefinitely.

As for hope, again, I can't think of anything worse than living life serving life in vain expectation of release.

I'm actually generally in favour of the death penalty. I just don't accept the gnashing and wailing that, because he isn't sentenced to death, he's getting off lightly. He's going to be facing a pretty rough time. The 10-21 year is, for all intents and purposes, a fallacy.

Whats Liam Brady done to offend you !?

Being locked up for 60 years he will no doubt serve is far more of a punishment than a death sentence for me.

Apart from playing for Arsenal you mean? Happens to have the same surname as the Moors Murderer, Ian Brady :thump:

I doubt very much he will be locked up for 60 years, as far as I can tell, there was no such recommendation in the Norwegian court. Sentence was 21 years, expect him to serve that fully as I doubt very much there will be any chance for parole.

The maximum sentence that could have been passed was 21 years, which is what he's got.

He'll very likely get life, because he's likely to always be a danger to others. The whole trial has been a way of Norway saying they won't be changed by Breivik, they are a country that are massively proud of their civil liberty and only 16% of their population supported capital punishment for Brievik. Norway don't want Breivik to be a martyr for the far right, and they don't want to start changing laws.

Can't really agree with that. He deserves to die.

He dies, his supporters (the scum of the world) get a martyr and an excuse to go out and try to emulate or better him. Norway lock him up for the rest of his days (and trust me, one way or the other he ain't getting out that jail free), it sends out a message: **** with us and we will make you rot in Hell for the rest of your days, and no, you won't be going to Valhalla you scummy *******s.

You do realise that Norway can perpetually keep him locked up for 5 years once his original sentence ends if he's still seen as a threat to society? (so, 21 years from now he'll get held back for another 5 years, and 5 years after that they'll hold him again and so on).

To me that sounds pretty grim, the constant thought of potentially being released every 5 years, only to not be.

Exactly. He dies, it's quick, clean, and he can go with a smile. This way, he'll be locked up until he dies, an old, forgotten man who ***** and ****es himself three times a day and needs help getting fed mush. In short, an embarrassment that will be the laughing stock of the prison he's locked up in.

Don't know about anyone else, but that looks like perfect justice to me.

At the end of 21 years he can then be given an extra 5 years every 5 years.

He has as much chance of getting out as Liam Ian Brady.

I didn't know about this extra 5 years business, sounds a good idea to me. I guess I just resent taxpayers' money being wasted on someone like him. I'm really surprised there's been no comment on the Zone about the two cases that have dominated the news locally, that of Martin Bunch murdering his former girlfriend or any more on the bouncers accused of killing Reece Lamude, both came to trial recently, and indeed, the Lamude case is ongoing.

I guess people are just too busy moaning about the football!
