Mayor Roger Weaver contacted SZ.com this morning, in person, to put forward his version of events of 'Chelsea-shirt-gate'.
He has granted SZ.com to an exclusive interview to clear things up - I sh*t you not.

Keep watching the front page..................

I don't really want to go into it on here chaps, but it was along the lines of 'everybody supports two teams, don't they?'...........

I think the point you would have as the strongest argument with is that by wearing the chain of office, he was representing not only the people of Southend but the businesses as well.

Of course this would not have caused any problems if he had not worn the chain, as indeed everyone in their private lifes are allowed to promote whatever team they chose. However when in the official capacity of Southend Mayor he should be representing the town's team.

Contrary to what, perhaps, others and maybe even Mr Weaver himself believe the only reason he is photographed for the Echo is because he is Mayor of Southend-on-Sea and/or a borough councillor. It is not because of his matinee idol looks, rapier wit or his general eligibility to the womenfolk of the town. (If that were the criteria you would never see me out of the Echo's pages.)
With this in mind any time he appears in the papers he should reflect his civic responsibilities NOT his private proclivities.

Fair dues to the bloke at least he's setting up a reply to a bunch of strangers.
perhaps he could open the next meet the blues day and be the first one in the stocks, complete with Chelski shirt on!

I saw someone who may have been Mayor Weaver in Waitrose yesterday.

He was wearing a pair of Spall tracksuit bottoms, a Beaver sports training top and an SUFC LDV cup final baseball cap.

a) he wasn't photographed by the Echo, but by Barclays. I'll write up an official clarification of his side of things.

So he was selling his and the town's soul to the corporates. Obviously as Barclays sponsor the Premier$hite they couldn't possibly have him wearing a shirt from any team outside of that league ('You mean there are actually football clubs outside of the Premier$hite? Well I never').

Let's face it, it wouldn't be the first time a member of Southend council has made a decision after 'influence' by a major corporate and it probably won't be the last (there's bound to be a planning application for another supermarket due soon).

I'm afraid it's less cynical than that. He's a Chelsea fan and has been for 40 years.

Out of interest what has Barclay's got to do with the FA Cup? they sponsor the Premier$hite not the FA Cup which is sponsored by Nationwide?

Or am I wrong?
