Breadline Britain

And where do you come in the survey?:smile:

Personally, I've been amazed at how ready people have been to talk about their household income on a public message board, but this takes it to a new low. You're now directly asking someone how much they earn?

I can't tell if you're joking of course as you use a smiley with almost every post. :winking::unsure::winking::unsure::dim::raspberry::omg::stupid you:

Actually, the survey doesn't reveal exactly how much a person earns. It merely compares their household income in net terms(relative to the rest of the rest of the UK population, that is).

(Since Richard-aka RichieC- is a personal friend of mine, I already have a pretty shrewd idea of what he and his wife earn and what their family circumstances are).I was just trying to encourage him to get off the fence for once,(in the nicest possible way,of course). :winking:

Since there would appear to be two sides to this debate, I'm rather curious as to where he really stands on what he himself calls, "The Talking Bollocks Society" issue. That's all.

Incidentally, you raise an interesting point here ,IMO.
Mark Zukerberg has stated that his primary purpose in creating Facebook(apart from eventually making some serious money, presumably) was his desire to break down the barriers betwen our public and private lives.
Unlike you, I'm not too concerned that people have been so ready, indirectly, "to talk about their household income on a public message board."
However I'm constantly suprised about what people are prepared to reveal about their private lives on here. Some people go on sponsored bike rides in far away places, others reveal problems with unpaid invoices.Still others reveal their various addictions, medical problems or desire to buy a three thousand quid watch etc, etc.
As the (not so)late lamented NOTW used to say,"All human life is here".It takes all sorts I suppose.Personally, I think Zukerberg was onto something important.

Also the survey did not ask for income from counterfeit sportswear or used auto sales which I imagine most Southend fans are involved in to some degree.

I was referring to the posters' household incomes, but you're #wrong again anyway. If you're aware of whether the poster has a partner and kids, then the percentage band will allow you to establish what the poster input as their annual household income after tax (to within 200 pounds in some cases). Should your friend answer your reckless question, he would be making a similar public broadcast.

This was the specific question you asked, whatever you may have been referring to.
Incidentally on the subject of the distinction between our public and private personas, why is it no longer possible for me to access the reputation comments on your(and others) public profile page?

when will people learn....

Depends whether you choose to quote the full post or just half of it or, in other words, cut out the piece where I refer to what I'm referring to, which was household income. By which I mean how much they earn by way of household income... and your reckless question to your friend about how much they earn in his household.

I'd be sure to tighten up any future potential miscommunications for you, but it's reminded me why I try never to engage you in debate, despite the often open goals. It's so exhausting when someone continually, and often purposely, misses or sidesteps the point on the basis of pedantry.

And that's a shame because, lazy/unsupported links to the Guardian aside, you do occasionally raise interesting questions (your Zuckerberg reference above a cracking example worthy of its own thread). The fact that more patient people than I simply tie you up in knots when you debate them is neither here nor there.

On this point, I have no idea. Perhaps just an innocent casualty of the upgrade?

Interesting survey.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/datablog/interactive/2012/jun/22/how-wealthy-you-compared

FWIW our household is in the "squeezed middle."

"58%
HAVE A LOWER INCOME THAN YOU
You are in the squeezed middle: income levels have not risen significantly and you're feeling the pinch"

Actually it's quite easy to see this survey is seriously flawed. If I discount our two kids who are effectively no longer living at home this becomes:-

"86%
HAVE A LOWER INCOME THAN YOU
You are well-off and in the top fifth of UK incomes"

Does this make me a champagne socialist?
Go figure. Can't say my wife or I feel all that rich, especially since we pay-quite rightly- for our 18 year old daughter's (minimal) higher education fees and also her board and lodging etc.

All I know about public service and my obligation to other citizens, I owe to Haines' Newsagents.

Btw, your Haines' Newsagents comment rather reminds me of my favourite Camus quote
"All I know most surely about morality and obligations, I owe to football" ,which(as I believe you know)I have on a T-shirt .
