Post-Match Thread and Ratings Boston 3-0 Southend United

Cheer up people, we have consistency and that is comforting. We know what league we will be in next season and we know what manager we will have. We know we will underperform, flatter to deceive and raise hopes and expectations beyond reality. We can probably count on being in this league for another five seasons and that will be coupled with a series of spiritless first round cup exits. I expect winning consistently must get very boring and who would want that?
Permanent purgatory preferable to going straight to hell?

For most of this season we have been poor in the final third. Yesterday we were woeful at both ends of the pitch. We were never going to get anything out of this game with that performance.

Boston showed the level of agression and desire that will likely keep them up and allow them to progress next season.

We need to sign Golding up as its clear his class makes a big difference in defence.

A few wingers with real pace would also be nice. I'm not sure we have ever had such a slow paced side.

Bring on Saturday. Win that and I will start to believe. Lose that and its probably our lot for this season.

A part time team, in the bottom 4 regardless of their current form and getting spanked 3-0 by them.

People are entitled to be a bit ****ed off!

Of course the second half was one to p*** us all off but current form is important in football. We certainly weren't playing the Boston from the time the postponement.

Credit to GC for what he has achieved. I was really impressed with Boston second half. The didn't try and kill the game with time wasting and fake keeper injury's. They went for it and they were rewarded. And as you would expect, very organise defending set pieces.

We had our chances in the first 45 and we didn't take them. The game turned on a great strike from one of their standard no nonsense throws ( the 3 amigos should study every Boston throw from last night).

Nice little tug on Morton to create the second. Just like the tug on Bonne to save goal in the first half. Like at least 20 other teams in this division they are better at it than us. So good the ref and half of our fans didn't see it.

We are on top with some impressive and by our standard no nonsense attacks but got smacked on the chin. Rather than sulk and over blame individuals like Goodliffe and Gubins. Players mangers and fans need to get back on their feet and man up for Saturday. There is still a top 7 spot available. That should be our focus because last night was certainly not the 4 out of 10 that some are claiming

This is not a fair representation and you should be looking at minutes per goal rather than games. If someone comes on for two minutes and doesn't score it's a bit unfair to say they went a through the game without scoring.

This part of your very good post (yes, I thought of the Aldershot floodlights, too!) reminds me of 1st January 1992 when we comprehensively beat Newcastle United 4-0 at Roots Hall to leave us, temporarily, top of what would now be called the Championship. As I was leaving the ground, a couple of Newcastle supporters behind me were mouthing off that the likes of Southend shouldn't even be allowed to play in the same league as their great club. I turned round and reminded them that past glory doesn't earn you the right to win games over less illustrious opponents.
Thats odd, as I must have been behind you and caught that conversation :)

IMO massive overreaction here. Yes it wasn't great. In fact it was poor but every team has one of these games once in a while. Only the fourth loss in the league since mid November. fFirst loss in 10 games. But games like this happen, plus the other fixtures didn't go too badly either. Bounce back on Saturday...
Yep, how I see it. Seemed like we couldn’t get going. I would have freshened it up tbh in line up more. Add to that probably our weakest defensive line up for a while and this was the result.

Get what your saying, but the goals scored are terrible, and just not enough if GSM leaves at the end of the season.

Surprised at Goodliffe too be honest. Know he's been in and out, but when we signed him, came with a lot of good wishes from Col U fans and sounded like something we needed.

Wonder how much of it is an attitude problem when players end up in the NL.
I too am surprised from the performances of Goodliffe since he joined. Many people were saying at the time that he was a quality signing and would prove to be an asset at our level. Even Glenn Pennyfather was singing his praises. Someone whose opinion I have a lot of time for.
However it seems that the Colchester management saw something that was not visible to our management or even Glenn.
We've had the wool well and truly pulled over our eyes.

Absolutely gutted for the fans that went there for the first game, came home and went again last night only to get dicked. 400 fans turning up in Lincs, three days after 800 in Hampshire. The support is unwavering and unmatched.
We are the Spursy of non league football, constantly flatter to deceive and guaranteed to let you down with a bump.
Its going down to the last day at the aris end of the country isnt it. I'll take that though !

That second half was amongst the worst I've seen all season - headless chickens. Knew as soon as we went 1-0 down to a side that one dimensional that we would find it impossible to break them down.
What I should have expected (but was still enraged to witness regardless) was the fact that even at 3-0 down we were still nonchalantly passing the ball around backwards and sideways prying for an opening (and failing miserably) rather than going gung-ho.
Thoroughly depressing performance, and Dr Southend shows up again for another team desperately seeking safety. Shows just how far off we are of being a genuine play-off contender, given we have pretty much the easiest run in of all the pretenders.

i Heard someone say on the terrace last night, we will finish around 7 pts outside the play offs and then look at our results against teams in the bottom and think what might have been. On to next season and repeat. It does seem that way this season. Weve performed pretty well against those above us and i wouldnt be surprised if we win saturday but its the results against some of the lower table that is costing us

Lost H and A to Maidenhead
drew away to Wealdstone
Lost A to Fylde
Lost away to Boston
Drew at H to Daggers
Lost/drew H & A to Yeovil
Lost H to Sutton
Drew A Aldershot

yet
Beat and drew with Rochdale
Beat H Alty
Drew A to Oldham
Drew H & A to FGR
Beat H & A Halifax
Beat H & A Eastleigh
Drew A Tamworth (only lost 3 or 4 at home so a better result than some first thought)

There maybe a few more examples but these are the ones i can remember
Its been an odd season all round as in previous seasons weve struggled against teams at the top and beaten those we think we should struggling down the bottom
