Echo News Blues boss Maher stresses need for new signings

Kevs preffered scoreline would always be a 1-0 win. 3 points and a clean sheet.

Sometimes you get a couple more and others you end up losing or drawing whilst holding out for a win (Saturday)

I'd love us to be far more gung ho ala Chesterfield and Wrexham but they had far more considerable fire power than us to be able to play that way.

What worried me about Saturday the most was the amount of possession york had. Must have been 60%+. That's not good enough.

We do need signings in and quickly
I’d say he preferred the 5-0 to a 10

Just watched the replay, Ashley Nathaniel-George looked a world beater, just what we need!
He wasn't a very useful team player last time he was with us, but I agree with you about how he played satirday. A much stronger more physical better player. Looked to have improved a lot.

Another day almost past and still nothing.. there must be something going on that we don’t know about.. Kev says we need 3/4 but has been saying this for weeks
There are always lots of things going on that we don't know about. It's about signing the right players and that can be tricky, contract duration, wages, availability of enough budget etc. We just need to be a bit patient as it's still early days.

No point signing for signings sake. Quality over quantity and that takes longer. I think we are all frustrated but one player isn't gonna completely change a whole team. It takes time. Id rather be short for the next 3 games and get the correct player in. Rather than rush and get someone who plays 1 off the bench all season because he is ****

Fair point 👍🏻

The better players (the ones we want/need) hang on to the last minute. They are of value and are wanted by an array of clubs. It takes time for them to weigh up their own options. The parent club, if they have one, also have to align their options/replacements. You don't just let players go without balancing your own books/playing staff.

We could easily go and sign 4 players tomorrow, but what quality will they possess? Players that haven't been snapped up already and will just sign at the drop of a hat aren't going to be the players that we want. It's the ones we have to haggle/wait around for until the right moment. It's massively frustrating of course, but if it means we have a successful season because we waited 3-4 games to get them, so be it.

Well, we let fonguck go and he would have been very useful Saturday.

His contract expired. You can't keep a player if they don't want to stay, not unless you go Phil Brown style and lock them in the changing room.

Even if he did stay, if we are serious about challenging at the top end, he isn't quite good enough to develop the numbers we are all talking about. He got 3 goals and had 2-3 assists last season. That doesn't help our cause this season. Steadying the ship last season was amazing and we'll always be grateful for that. However with all due respect to them, but ending up at Ebbsfleet suggests top clubs at this level feel the same about him too. I'm sure we will acquire a replacement and they should hopefully produce better numbers.

Last year we controlled the vast majority of games we played through keeping possession, much like York did in the second half on Saturday. Hardly anyone will be able to do it as well as they did.

There are people who seem to want us to control games and get it forward all the time. Doesn't work unfortunately. Fortunately, when we find it hard to control games, we have two strikers with pace to give us an out ball and we also have some threat from set pieces.

Saturday was not ideal but let's not pretend we'll be playing teams as good as that every week. Our game is also based on getting the ball wide and getting balls into the box. York played so well they pinned our wing backs and also with Bridge in the centre we rarely managed to create anything from wide positions.

People saying they don't understand why we sat back... we weren't given a choice!
