Not been enthusiastic enough to go to a game this season for various reason's but will be seeing BS for the first time maybe this month , without seeing him , surely he is no worse than Drewe , Graeme Jones or some of the ****e we was served up for them couple of years ....if so ....OUCH !! ANd to think we let strikers like Charlie Mac and Paul Benson go as deemed not good enough for us ...them boys would rip up this league ;(

well said whoever the southend legend is!! i think blair sturrock quite frankly is one of the worst players in recent years to wear the shrimpers shirt, i love the way some of you on here get off completely on him, this is league 2 bottom half, we are talking about, he was released from non league mansfield on a free transfer,

do you think they knew what they were doing. to even try and compare benjy and sturrock, quite frankly is insulting. prior to joining us, benjy had done at lots of clubs at differnt levels. whereas sturrock, had been poor and even spending time in the non league. the comparison is quite frankly insulting

......can't take anyone serious that don't use capital letters, Captain Clueless more like, football and written English!

Now that is funny...:hilarious:

I know you are a Blair fan where as I am not....I was talking to an ex SUFC forward and prolific marksman on Sunday and one of the first things he said to me was..."What the hell is that Blair Sturrock all about"..he went on to say that even at his current age he could still do a better job than BS who only ever plays with his back to the goal...he asked me to find out the stats for him for how many league games he has actually started for league clubs not managed by his father and as you are so fond of your stats there is a little job for you.

He still goes to nearly all the home games and thinks not only is BS a waste of space but that this is the worst SUFC team he has ever seen. So I will take his judgement on BS over your one I am afraid.

David Crown??

I must admit that i speak to crowny all the time, he sits in front of us and always gets my son a teamsheet b4 games. in all the time i have spoken to him, yes he gets frustrated and yes he has an opinion but he has never openly slagged off any player. he normally speaks quite positively and with his professional head on. i like many dont get the whole BS slating. he is not the best and certainly not the worst we have had, but i would take him over paynter, harrold, revell of recent times. he holds the ball up well and brings others into play. the main problem on the board is that the tilly lovers still havnt got over his departure and wont give PS a chance and therefore BS stands no chance. while he wears a blue shirt he desreves the backing and support. i would like one fan who thinks its right to shout and abuse to actually explain how they think this helps our players. for what its worth i also spoke to paul clarke on saturday and he is very dissapointed by the crowds actions and behaviour, during his time as a player/manager he never heard it in the ground and doesnt think it is anyway helpful. UTB

Even if Blair wasn't one of our better, more intelligent players he gives his all which should be enough to get the support of the crowd, particularly after last season.

exactly, if half the players last year gave us the effort that some of this team put in then we probably would have stayed up.

My take on it is that blair just isnt a striker . He reminds me a lot of lee bradbury. He works incredibly hard for the team and has a decent touch and passing range but cant shoot for ****.

Even at this relatively low level of pro football he cant score goals which suggests he never will.

Blair would be a better midfielder or playing behind another front two.

Is he a class player ? No he isnt . Are any of our current team class ? Debateable.

He works incredibly hard and gives 100% which is something i value and i for one will not boo a player like that as he can only do his best.

We have had a 100's of players who just couldnt give a ****. Lazy players with infinately more talent that blair . Id rather have blair to any of those.

One thing i think we can all agree on is that we are not playing attractive football of the kind that Tilly liked to play, and we currently have maybe 5+ players who need to be shown the door so that better players can come in.

Im not enjoying being a southend fan at the mo, but im still hopeful sturrock get a better team in by the end of this season and have a real push next season.

To be fair getting promoted is the least of our concerns right now.

Paul Sturrock said when he was building his team that it was not only for promotion, but also strong enough to do well in League 1. That now looks an absolute joke.
It's a good job that Corr has upped his scoring rate for his career and has been a lot better than people thought, otherwise we would probably be bottom of the League. This thread is mainly about Blair, and I am giving my brutal but honest opinion, he is not the type of striker you need if you are talking about promotion like P.S. was doing.
The reason he plays back to goal is that he has no intention of ever trying to out pace even the slowest centre backs in this League. We are crying out for pace, and a better goal scorer up front, surely some of you can see that.

.

I think most people would agree that confidence is massively important to a football player, so with that in mind....

Would you rather Sturrock said 'I'm getting together the best possible team I can in the circumstances, we will probably have to sell most of them if we get promoted/ seriously want to puch for promotion as frankly they are only good enough for league 2'

Seriously, what do you think he should have said?

My take on it is that blair just isnt a striker. .

hate to agree with tom haha but i think he's right there.

for me blair isn't a striker either. yes he works hard etc etc. but for me forwards are judged on goals. i think from memory he has 3. for someone who has played as many games as he has that is simply not enough. believe it or not thats not my biggest worry is blair. to give a bit of an examply was in the 2nd half against oxford i believe so played him through and as he was running towards the ball he had a man in front and loads of space and a man behind. i could see before he was even near the ball he was going to look back and go backwards. i couldn't believe it, if that was me i would have loved to pick up the ball and run at the defending, yeah he may not have scored but its the intentionm attacking brain, willingness to try and create something. I don't think blair has that.

again blair negative tactics annoy the hell out of me. i appreciate he works hard i really do and i applaud that but for me he's no where near the standard for even league 2 football. this is just my take as why a fair few people are growing tired of BS. I still don't think theres anything there between corr and BS either.

Most people agree that Sturrock gives 100 per cent effort but is that enough? As our ex-striker quite rightly says, he spends too much time with his back to goal. Lets look at facts. He has been involved in 24 games including 19 starts and has scored just 4 goals! The number of assists to his name is just one! He has had 38 shots at goal of which 21 were off target! Both Paterson and Corr have much better goal scoring percentages and they have had more shots on target than off target. Blair Sturrock is not a young player who may improve, he has been released by non-league outfits.
Blair seems to be a love him or hate him figure, but emotions aside, the bare facts do not hint at him being a good player even at this level.

someone who talks sense rather than just feeling sorry for a player. stats don't lie

I can remember the start of the 87/8 season when I'm pretty sure Paul Clark was playing, the team & manager (Dick Bate!!) were getting quite a bit of stick home and away much worse than this season.

Also a good crosser of the ball too (cf. first goal v Hereford). Tom's probably right that his best position now would be behind a front two, but I guess that's an unrealistic luxury in the hurly-burly of L2.
