Blair is a good player, and whole hearted, BUT, you will never get promoted with a non-scoring striker like that starting so many games, unless his partner is banging in over 35 a season, which is not going to happen.

Having watched football for over 40 years, all that holding the ball up and tapping it sideways or backwards does not equate to goals or promotion, as well as being very boring.
Give me a pacy striker that can get around the back and score goals any day.

My commiserations on missing the 1990-91 season, probably my favourite ever season.

The pace of Angell and Benjamin was a delight to behold as they banged in 28 league goals between them, without Ian Benjamin once tapping it sideways or backwards.

You don't need prolific strikers to win promotion, it's contributions from the team as a whole that counts. Other than Grant, I think I'm right in saying no other member of our squad outside of our strikers has more than one league goal to their name. That's our problem, though obviously leaking goals doesn't help either.

I'd agree with Wiggy, but Danny Webb had the potential to be a good player. People can moan and say where is he now, but it's equally important to remember that he was at Southampton before us. He was also 17 when he was in our team....

...so was Mrs. Patterson at Southampton and can honestly say that he plays like an amateur, no strength, no vision and no awareness. We won't win many games with him in the starting lineup!

To be fair getting promoted is the least of our concerns right now.

Morris, Barker, Corr, Mohsni and Grant so get over it thick idiots you wonderful Zoners that think he is playing cause his dad is the manager. I mean hardly the Danny/ David Webb scenario is it as he WAS completely useless, bit like headless Patterson come to think of it!

Agree. With the addition of Clohessy, Hall and Morris (plus Ferdinand and Crawford as ones for the future).

The title of this thread sums up how bad times have got as an SUFC supporter.

So true. Blair Sturrock is not a great player, he's not even a good player, he may well not even be an adequate player.

That said, it doesn't mean he is necessarily not worth a place in the starting line up as the squad comprises only players who fit that description.

When we finished roughly where we are now, back in 1970 the side had Billy Best, Phil Chisnall, Bill Garner, Eddie Clayton, Gary Moore, Mike Beesley and other memorable players. Even in that dreadful season in 1985 when we managed to finish lower than we are now, there was Ron Pountney, Steve Phillips and Glenn Pennyfather. But this current batch ...... no thanks Ron.

So basically Sturrock's doing a fantastic job to be out-performing teams containing bona fide Southend legends.....

Now that is funny...:hilarious:

I know you are a Blair fan where as I am not....I was talking to an ex SUFC forward and prolific marksman on Sunday and one of the first things he said to me was..."What the hell is that Blair Sturrock all about"..he went on to say that even at his current age he could still do a better job than BS who only ever plays with his back to the goal...he asked me to find out the stats for him for how many league games he has actually started for league clubs not managed by his father and as you are so fond of your stats there is a little job for you.

He still goes to nearly all the home games and thinks not only is BS a waste of space but that this is the worst SUFC team he has ever seen. So I will take his judgement on BS over your one I am afraid.

I have no professional qualifications in numbers whatsoever, surely my numbers would be invalid compared to those of, say an accountant?

I think you'll find it's about 33, with over half being for a club on their way to the Conference the season he played for them.

well said whoever the southend legend is!! i think blair sturrock quite frankly is one of the worst players in recent years to wear the shrimpers shirt, i love the way some of you on here get off completely on him, this is league 2 bottom half, we are talking about, he was released from non league mansfield on a free transfer,

do you think they knew what they were doing. to even try and compare benjy and sturrock, quite frankly is insulting. prior to joining us, benjy had done at lots of clubs at differnt levels. whereas sturrock, had been poor and even spending time in the non league. the comparison is quite frankly insulting
