Billy Paynter Fights for his Place

yeah i think people underestimate how useful bradbury can be... i reckon he will feature a lot next season as you know exactly what you will get from him.. especially if his partner is banging in the goals he will lay them on a plate for them all day long and help out defensively

Port Vale's player of the season 2004/5 . He looked ****-hot when he played for them

He must have the talent , but he has to produce . No more running round like a headless chicken please Billy -- and no more barracking from the stands either

He looked like a headless chicken but that was to be expected. He was playing with unknown team mates, a new strike partner, he was thrown in at the deep end and in a new system. It wasn't surprising his touches didn't find freddy and vice versa. He hadn't settled in the area that was clear but it looks as though he as now, He has a kid down here and he looks happy again.

Hope your right - one thing's for sure , his touches won't find Freddy this year either -

(oh bollox - just mentioned Fred again )

When he played for Port Vale against us I thought he was just what we needed... Someone with a bit of strength and power upfront that could put it about a bit. Looked a very useful player to have around, especially if the football got messy as it undoubtedly will against some teams next season.

As for Bradbury, i hope to god Tilson realises that we need 2 strikers up front next season. Last time we were here we had Goater who, despite his age, still chipped in with 10 league goals... More than Bradbury has scored for us in total. Last year, teams knew that if they shut down Eastwood, it was very unlikely that we'd score because of Bradbury's fear of a shot on goal... Hopefully we have players now that can come in without that fear.

To be fair if Goater had played right wing and then in the Championship in last seasons team like Bradbury did he would have scored quite a few less.....

Bradbury has played a big part in the side over the last 18 months, but I agree without Eastwood we need two strikers able to score goals between them and whilst Tilson may use him for his experience I think its time for him to take a step back.

Seems a very bold statement (excuse the pun). I'm not sure I ever remember him laying on a goal for anyone in a Southend shirt offhand!

I also think McDonald will outscore Paynter whatever the final tallies they get are.

People have more respect for him now after reading some of the things he has said and they have perhaps read match reports or even watched him play at his best. I never lost faith him and really wanted him to come back here, and i know its the same for him. He is young but now is the time for him deliver and to be honest i think he will thrive off that new pressure. He is better than Harrold, he can and will be better than Bradders this season, he has more raw talent than Foran and as yet i cannot compare him to Macdonald. Have faith.

Im hoping you are right, but even though we didnt see much of him what attributes are you basing this on ?

Whilst not setting the world alight Foran showed glimpses of talent far outweighing what I see Paynter did.

Paynter to me had extremely poor touch, no pace, won few headers for his size and the headless chicken comments ring true.

Its a new season, he has decent preparation this time round, against poorer opposition and we should hopefully create more chances. Its all set up for him to prove himself and I really hope he does.

Im still puzzled why people suddenly think he is going to be a great player scoring 20 goals based on what Ive seen of him.

I certainly remember him knocking the ball down on a number of occassions in the penalty area, plus late in the season he hit the bar which led to Gower scoring...

I agree that there is an anti-boo boys back lash on this board regarding Paynter, and that has to an extent resulted in a ‘love in’.

However, you’ve got to hand it to Paynter, 8 or 9 players out of 10 would have forgotten all about our club by now and just be looking for the fastest exit they could find. Hats off to him that he’s not like that. On the contrary, he has the professional “I intend to fight for my place” reaction (a bit like Beckham and England, except Beckham can’t just go to anyone else who would have him, whereas Paynter could do).

Regardless of how he actually performs, I say credit to him for sticking with us despite what has happened so far. I agree that with that attitude it will be like a new signing (although of course, new signings aren’t always brilliant as we know – let’s see).

Well done Paynter and let's see you stick 20 in the net next season to make the doubters eat their words!

Plus he picked out Gower again against Leeds in March for his goal.
