Best roots hall memory

Its impossible to pick you but mine include:

* My first ever Southend United game, losing 1-0 in the FA Cup to Kingstonian.
* Beating Luton 3-2 in the FA Cup. Tes Brambles' overhead kick in the dying minutes.
* Coming for 2-0 down at half time to Rushden, to win 4-2 on boxing day.
* Beating QPR 4-0 in the LDV, Drewenaldo with 2, Leon and Clark with the others.
* Colchester in the LDV. What a night, Drewenaldo sending us to the Millenium Stadium.
* Beating Bristol Rovers the following year in the LDV Area Final.
* Northampton in the play-offs.
* Freddys' debut vs Swansea.
* Beating QPR 5-0 live on Sky.
* Gray scoring vs Bristol City to win the league for us.
* Beating Man Utd thanks to Freddys' free kick.

Other memorabile times at Roots Hall include last minute winners Vs the likes of Bury and York. The Shrewsbury game back in league 2 with the snow. Coming for 2-0 down vs Darlington to win 3-2. Beating Brentford in a crucial game a few years back, we where brilliant that day.

I sure am going to miss that place...

I have been thinking about this for a while now and still can't narrow it down to less than 15 games and events.

1. Liverpool 79
2. Man utd 1-0
3. Col u beam Back 3-0 win lge 1
4. col u 3-1 lge 1
5. col u ldv semi dreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewe
6. after sinking a few pints in the bar in the east stand after the col u ldv game i snuck out to the pitch and dived (Klinsman like) onto the hollowed turf. I still have the unwashed top in a bag in the loft.
7. We are top of the league. newcastle 4-0
8. richard cadette debut v borient
9. first goalkeeper i saw score Danny Gay in a reserve game
10. lincoln at home 1981 0-0 started of in the south bank and after fighting broke out they strated taking southend fans out of the south and round to the north bank in front of the west. As i reached the North Bank i turned round to see fans still coming out of the south and they were 4/5 deep the whole way round the track. Then the atmosphere in the North was amazing the smell of sweat and Blow was unreal.
11. wolves 87 what a noise yeeeeeeeeeeeeeellowsssssssssssssssss.
12. micky thouy, my fav player as a kid watching from the north bank i was gutted when we sold him for A few grand to a non league team.
13. Various pitch invasions Luton, ipswich, derby (i made it to the half way line) and that title winning one was special as i managed to collar A certain mr barrett and get him to pose for a picture with the kids.
14. 7.7 seconds the rest is history
15. 93 fa cup v millwall 1-0 stanley collymore winner the millwall fans kicked off tried climbing over the fence in the south terrace. the song rang out JUST BECAUSE YOUR LOSING.

i think if we all sit down we could roll off 50 moments that are gold to us as individuals.

I will never forget making a banner for the liverpool match saying COLIN MORRIS WALKS ON WATER. we had one corner for it to be seen and we rushed home to watch it on match of the day and the buggers never showed it. as a 11 year old i was devastated. i've got over it now.

I know there are plenty of writers out there surely there must be someone out there who will put a book together of all the memories of Roots Hall from the fans side of it.

Any Takers.

Shrewsbury in the snow was brilliant. I just remember thinking "call the game off the game ref". As soon as Freddy scored the goal I thought "Don't you dare call this game off ref"!

That was crazy, I was stewarding that night absolutely freezing my knackers off couldn't wait to get home!

Us against Bristol for the league 1 title - Constant reminders that nobody was allowed to run on the pitch after the final whistle, and everyone did anyway!!

Gonna have 3 cos I am greedy....

Being part of the biggest crowd that ever graced the Roots Hall ground.....against Liverpool in 1979....standing on a milk crate on the South Bank...

And then over 25 years later, to be there again for the ManU game....

Seeing my son running out with the team as one of the mascots against Coventry during our flirt with the championship...

Happy memories....

Ah, "The Show in the Snow" as it was dubbed. By me at least, if not anyone else! Great memory that, as are so many of those mentioned here.

A personal one would be a game against Peterborough, circa 1987. My Dad and his mates (canveyshrimper and Firestorm would have been among them) were in the North Bank as per usual, but for some reason I chose to stand totally on my own in the North/West corner.

The ball went out of play and came near me. Aged seven or eight, I was incredibly excited at the prospect of getting my hands on the match ball. So I picked it up and decided to give it a big punt back on to the field. Only I totally mis-kicked it and failed to get it back on the pitch despite being about fifteen yards away. A bit embarrassing and I played it safe at the second attempt by sheepishly throwing the ball back to the waiting player...

I remember that well, screaming for the entire last 15 minutes "Don't you f***ing dare" at the ref everytime he looked at his linos and asked what do you reckon.

My most memorable Roots Hall memories are in the order they've come into my head:-

1. Beating Manchester United that wonderful November evening.

2. The Goat's farewell and the title winning party that followed Wayne Gray's winner.

3. The win over Tottenham in 1989/90 season League Cup, damm the away goal rule.

4. My first ever game v Hereford FA Cup 1980.

5. The joy of beating Col U to reach Cardiff and our first major final.

6. Spanking Aldershot 10-1 in front of about 1,000 people on a freezing cold Tuesday night.

7. Stan's debut, two goals and great showing, a legend was born.

8. Stan's last game beating Luton 2-1 to stay up and seeing him paraded around the pitch in only his pants after the supporters strip his kit off him.

9. Freddie's 7 second goal and debut hat trick.

10. The death of referee Mike North during the Mansfield game, the stunned silence of the crowd as we realised that something terrible had happened.

Wasn't there for that one, but my dad had taken my son. Remember being very shocked to hear about it, amazed you've still got the poor guy's name.

Ah yes, I too remember that very well indeed. Not a good memory, but a vividly clear one nonetheless.

As a result, we had the rare - and unwanted - distinction of playing our last league game a couple of days after the season had actually finished.

It was a horrible day and is the only unhappy memory that immediately springs to mind, I admit to having to look up his name in my Centenary Book, there is a plaque in his memory in the tunnel that I've seen a couple of times.

We had to get permission from the FA to play the match after the season finished. Ourselves and Mansfield had nothing left to play for so they gave us the ok as the original game was very close to the end of the season, it was Easter Monday in April I believe.

- coming back from 2-0 down to QPR in a cup-tie to draw 2-2 at a time when QPR were one of the top sides in the country. Remember watching this game from right at top of old south bank.

Brilliant game! remember the deafening corus from within the north bank of 'Stannnnnley Bowels is a wan*er is a wan*er' as he lined up to take a free kick on the edge of our box. To his credit he had a genuine grin from ear to ear as the noise hit him. Top bloke.
