Southend United are delighted to announce the signing of Ben Goodliffe on loan from Colchester United until the end of the season.
The 25-year-old centre back joins straight up with Kevin Maher’s side and is eligible for this afternoon’s fixture against Dagenham & Redbridge.
Born in Watford, the central defender came through the ranks at Tottenham Hotspur until his release at the age of 16, then making the switch to non-league Boreham Wood to continue his development. After impressing in just a handful of games, Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers won the race for his signature in March 2017.
A regular for the Wolves U21 side in Premier League Two, Ben made the loan switch to this afternoon’s opponents, with whom he represented 33 times.
Goodliffe then signed for National League side Sutton United, becoming a crucial part of the defence that helped Matt Gray’s team to the title in the following season, prompting his inclusion in the National League Team of the Season.
While with Sutton, Ben made over 50 appearances in the club’s first season in the EFL, which included a start in the Papa John’s Trophy final at Wembley Stadium.
Goodliffe made the switch to Colchester United last summer, playing for the U’s 14 times, and will now make the move from north to south Essex to represent the Shrimpers until the end of the season.
Ben will wear the number 20 shirt during his time in SS2 and is available to sponsor by contacting the Commercial Department on 01702 304147 or emailing commercial@southend-united.co.uk.
