Southend United are delighted to announce the signing of Ben Goodliffe on loan from Colchester United until the end of the season.

The 25-year-old centre back joins straight up with Kevin Maher’s side and is eligible for this afternoon’s fixture against Dagenham & Redbridge.

Born in Watford, the central defender came through the ranks at Tottenham Hotspur until his release at the age of 16, then making the switch to non-league Boreham Wood to continue his development. After impressing in just a handful of games, Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers won the race for his signature in March 2017.

A regular for the Wolves U21 side in Premier League Two, Ben made the loan switch to this afternoon’s opponents, with whom he represented 33 times.

Goodliffe then signed for National League side Sutton United, becoming a crucial part of the defence that helped Matt Gray’s team to the title in the following season, prompting his inclusion in the National League Team of the Season.

While with Sutton, Ben made over 50 appearances in the club’s first season in the EFL, which included a start in the Papa John’s Trophy final at Wembley Stadium.

Goodliffe made the switch to Colchester United last summer, playing for the U’s 14 times, and will now make the move from north to south Essex to represent the Shrimpers until the end of the season.

Ben will wear the number 20 shirt during his time in SS2 and is available to sponsor by contacting the Commercial Department on 01702 304147 or emailing commercial@southend-united.co.uk.

Great signing. I assume Crowther's injury is now looking longer term?
Interesting to note that Peterborough were very close to putting a bid in for Goodliffe only 18 months ago.

On paper, it’s surprising to see him here. Seems highly rated and has scored 4 in 14 for Colchester from centre back. Wonder why he’s not getting in the side.

So where does this guy fit in?

Is he left sided, right sided, a ball playing central centre-half?

Are there some injuries (other than Crowther) we don’t know about?

We already have four fit centre-halves so to sign a fifth who is on EFL wages seems a strange move (some may remember the Steve Jones loan many years ago when we were solidly midtable and he was on a massive wage). If we needed a fifth centre-half as depth a Deon Woodman type youngster would have made more sense. Ralph and Taylor have been our best players so far this season and Golding had made a positive impression.

I’m all for adding quality (and until recently he had a decent resume) but this seems a strange move by itself. There seems to be something missing.

I assume he’s not out of contract in the summer if they’re loaning him until the end of the season?

Yep a certain centre forward is definitely missing. This signing went completely below the radar as like you i thought we had enough central defenders. We shall see i guess.

I messaged my Cull Ewe seaso mate 😇, don't hold it against me!!!, earlier.

"Goodlife is a good player, don’t know what the hell happened, think he has fallen out with the Cowleys. Solid and a reel handful in the opponents box too. Think he has scored a few this season."
"Had his full front teeth kicked out & jaw injured in the first game of the season bizarrely, and he also scored just before it happened. Good signing."

Sounds like could be a decent player at this level.

nice to have a central defender that can head a ball and also score goals at the other end , Some of you saying this is a strange signing ,yet so many been saying we lack goals from our central defenders ,i dont see it as strange ,i think ths is a really good loan signing and hopefully can be turned into a permanent signing, think the last defender we got from Col Ewe was criticised at the time but ended up not just captain of this club but also well respected , If Ben can be as good as John White i think yoou all will be very very happy with this .

I dont think this is strange at all, really good signing. We needed reinforcements in defence after last week (and quite a lot this season), so a quality CB is completely needed. If said CB can add much needed goals, then bring it on!
