He was by far and away my highest scoring batsman last year with the same instructions. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if he's just been incredibly unlucky.
I always set mine to what they are i.e Cautious = V. Defensive, Defensive = Defensive etc. and then fiddle about from there.

If normal worked last year, it maybe that you have slightly better bowlers against him now, so maybe try him as Defensive.

This is why Freindlies are so handy because you can try stuff like this out and it doesn't really matter, and occasionally you stumble across something that really helps.

I thought it went defensive - very defensive, cautious - defensive, steady - normal etc.

To be honest I don't get much value from friendlies other than keeping up the form of reserve players. 9 times out of ten you're up against average players so he regularly gets 100+ runs when he plays.

I think I might try him on defensive next game.

On a more positive note, I ended up breezing to victory with an outstanding innings from my first and third batsmen.

22.1 nb4 Woosnam to Bowden
no ball, This game is all about placement and timing. Eased into the gap, four runs. Bowden shows an elegant simplicity in his batting, one for the purists.

End of Over 22: 182-1, runrate=8.27, reqrunrate=0.14 (185-9)
Sharma 1-0-12-0
Bowden* 92 (73 balls)
Newton 85 (58 balls)
Last Wicket: Worrall b. Innes 1 (FOW: 4/1)

Cup runs keep on getting in the way, but if I get knocked out early this year (more than likely) I'm going to try and play the same opponent for the rest of the season.

I did it about three seasons ago and its a good way of seeing how little tweaks make a difference. However its well worth playing the same opponent three times with both teams exactly the same line-ups and set-ups as a control as you'll see that even then performances fluctuate.

End of Over 30: 136-0, runrate=4.53, reqrunrate=4.15 (218-10)
Briggs 5-0-20-0
Raziuddin* 55 (81 balls)
Tselane 78 (100 balls)

Looking like a comfortable win. Difficult to tell if the experiment of opening with Tselane has worked as they are not the best bowling attack.

End of Over 29: 153-4, runrate=5.28, reqrunrate=6.33 (285-8)
Orr 5-1-27-1
Canning* 20 (25 balls)
Irfan 4 (12 balls)

Last Wicket: Thomas c. Hope b. Orr 44 (FOW: 134/4)

Bugger. That'll be my four best batsman out, I'm behind the required rate and my middle to lower order collapses quicker than Thierry Henry in a penalty box.

Well I stumbled home for the loss of 3 wickets. I believe that means that nobody in my league has a 100% record after 3 matches!

End of Over 41: 188-2, runrate=4.59, reqrunrate=3.44 (218-10)
Elliot 6-0-20-2
Ul-rehman* 1 (1 balls)
Thackeray 0 (0 balls)

Last Wicket: Tselane st. Sweeney b. Elliot 102 (FOW: 188/2)

A mini-collapse but should still get home. It will be interesting to see if Tselane gets an XP pop on Monday as that was his maiden 100.

Made 275-5 on my dusty pitch, oppo need 9 an over off the last 8 with 6 wickets. Looks to be tight.

And that's the end of the match. BATTY SHRIMPERS won by 7 wickets.
Wickham CC 218-10
BATTY SHRIMPERS 219-3

1st league win of the season

And that's the end of the match. Southend United won by 9 wickets.
Grassroot Greats 261-3
Southend United 263-1

With the winning runs coming in a nice fashion,

47.2 4 Husbands to Bartlett
Stroked through the covers and Docherty won't catch that.
Thats his 150. A fine knock.

Lost again! I was bowled out about 20 runs short. I was at one stage about 240-4 chasing 285. Looks like my adventures in the second tier will be short as our goalkeeper.

Won.

I got 317 all out in 50 overs. I lost 9 Wickets in the last 6 overs. Including 3 in the last 3 balls...

Knocked them over for 181 in 41 overs. I have a Prof/Strong spinner who bowls number 5 and I have him set to defensive and he really ties up on end whilst my strong/superb Seamer knocks them over t'other end.

Won by 6 wickets which mantains my 100% record in Level 4. Bowled them all out for 164 and after being 60-4, my 5th wicket p'ship put on over 100 for the win!

Any dusty pitch experts out there who can offer some advice?

I'm playing my cup game on a dusty pitch tomorrow. Looks like being a close game, they have a superb top order but not too much else. I'm debating which of my bowlers to play as I don't have much experience of playing on dusty pitches.

I have one regular spinner and two part timers:

Superb/Proficient (Superb/Competent bat)
Competent/Strong (Strong/Competent bat)
Mediocre/Proficient

My other bowlers are:

Strong/Competent - M
Strong/Competent - M
Proficient/Respectable - M
Respectable/Remarkable - F (Competent/Superb bat)

What I'm wondering is how much benefit the lower skilled spinners will give me on a dusty pitch compared to the higher skilled seamers?

Obviously playing the second spinner will allow me to stick another batsman in and bat down to 9 which is a bonus. Should I play one, two or three of the spinners? Any thoughts? Cheers.

I would use just the 2 spinners as I think they have to be pretty good to have the desired effect on a Dusty pitch. Earlier this year I played 2 on a dusty picth, Strong/Comp and Resp/Feeb, set v def and def and they got spanked all round the park, so good luck

Sorry only just seen this. How many did you go with in the end?

I would have gone with 3. I always use 3 mainly as I don't have any decent seamers but my spinners are:
Prof/Strong
Qual/Strong
Resp/Resp

None of them ever get spanked. There will be the odd over where they go for several boundaries but over all 10 they are economical.

I bowl sets of 5. So my 2 seamers start. Even on a dusty wicket and against top opposition I'd hope to get one or of the top order out with them. Then My Quality spinner comes on first change. He is steady and I have him set to normal. He pairs up with the Resp again set to normal. Then I pair the Prof up with the 2 seamers. I set him to Defensive to dry up the runs and either him or the seamers run through.

Although my league last year wasn't up to much this tactic has been working against Strong top orders this year to great effect. On all wickets not just dusty.
