Oh and guess what, sometimes they let us pesky foreigners win! Who would have thought it?

Is it jealousy, or xenophobia? The US consistently makes TV and films far better than we do.

Certainly not! I loved Friends, Cheers, Fresh Prince, Mork and Mindy even Happy Days. I just happen to think that a comparison of awards won with a 25 year time differentiation is hardly comparable, and that awards won by a Channel 4 programme that have "Channel 4" in the title bear no significance whatsoever.

The Americans have also made some of the best drama series - Paperchase, Hill Street Blues, Streets of San Francisco etc - I'm definitely not xenophobic!

I hope ACU appreciates the fact that I've been arguing his corner for him almost the whole morning so far! I am now going to do my paperwork. For the final time!

OBL - I did try to find a nice picture of Richard Beckinsale, but couldnt find a decent enough one without his mullet.

Did the boys know that he is Kate Beckinsale's dad?!

I'm sure he appreciates it ... plus you can say that at least you had a fighting chance in this contest

OK, fair enough. But I think you can broaden your horizons slightly. Friends, Cheers, FP, Mork and Mindy (a spin-off of Happy Days) and Happy Days are hardly what you would call taxing viewing.

What about Arrested Development, Seinfeld, The Wire, Homicide, NYPD Blue, Fletcher....

Loads of more intelligent, thought-provoking comedy and drama which is light years ahead of UK shows and what you have seen so far...

Ok, am back, made 4 piles into two piles of papers and put a load of stuff in the recycling bag so it looks better!

I watch tv for entertainment which is largely what TB finds hard to understand in why I like the kind of shows Ant and Dec do, they are largely easy on the brain, light and frothy - the shows! If I want to watch something thought provoking then I'll choose to do so, I enjoy historical documentaries and some wildlife programmes, stuff like Have I Got News For You, Mock the Week etc.

If I'm watching a drama then, again, I like it to be easy to understand, not requiring loads of analysis, dissection and a degree in pyschology to understand what's going on. I do intelligent and thought provoking stuff in my working life, and also to some extent in the organisation of our family life, which is why tv is for me, relaxation time, and why my preferred choice of show is fairly straightforward.

Might need to drag a few friends or alter egos out of the closet for this one, are we going to let this happen to a truly great British classic comedy?

Kate Beckinsdale should be the ultimate red card because she wasn't even in Rising Damp!

Yeah, he's a picture of Kelsey's daughter Spencer. She wasn't in Frasier :nope:

You try getting pictures of two dead men that might look even vaguely appealing! That's the thing about British comedy though, it doesn't rely on body perfectionsim the way that the Americans do - even Roseanne Barr lost loads of weight!

Come on people British comedy!

Sorry ACU, tried my best, seems like I'm on a losing streak in this competition.

Not having a pop, but if you browse the older threads you'll see when this comp was first mooted it was up to the Zoners to nominate their favourites and the first 32 were entered, simple as that

I'm afraid that was before my time, old chap.

Still, in the event of a second competition, may I suggest these sitcom behemoths..

Bottle Boys, Curry and Chips, Bless this House, Love Thy Neighbour, Mind You Language, Home to Roost, Sorry, Robin's Nest and George and Mildred

In hindsight, I think we could easily have split this a number of ways - English sitcoms, American sitcoms, pre 1980 sitcoms, after 1980s sitcoms etc. Oh well, if it ever comes up again in some years time hopefully someone will remember the whole glut of sitcoms that never made it to the initial stages, including The Royle Family, Soap, Cheers, Please Sir, Don't Wait Up, The Cuckoo Waltz etc.
