Barry Fry and The Great Escape

What, exactly, he thinks the supporters of Southend think of him.

If he says anything remotely different to "Fat Judas B*stard", remind him.

Does he still blame Ed Stein and David Howell for "making" him quit us for Brum ??

I heard that Brady tapped up Messers S + H and got them to lean on Fry to make him jump ship

Does he realise his death will be greeted with a day of celebration in South East Essex?

in all seriousness, I have read his book and he felt that he made the right move by joining Brum. However I wonder face to face, if asked the question whether that really is the case.

I like others, can't forgive him for the way he left, as I still firmly believe that if he had stayed, we would have made the promised land !!! Surely, it would have been more impressive taking up "little Southend" than revitalising a "sleeping giant".

The team he had, ie the one he built with the cash from Stan, was still to this day, one of the most entertaining I have seen, surely others must agree with that.

.....................

(oh PS: at the end of the interview remind him he is still a **** !!!)

Thank you very much for your help, chaps!

I'm afraid I won't be passing on all of your messages, but I'll certainly be asking him if he regrets his decision to move on and what he thinks he might have achieved here had he stayed.

Right, I'm offski. Ta-raa!

I suppose its too late to ask the question whether walking over broken glass to get to Southend, like he claimed he would, hurt as much as breaking the hearts of impressionable kids who believed him.

The broken glass he would have walked over to get to Southend and the broken hearts he trampled over when he left for Birmingham...

Make up your own questions!

Great minds!

:p

This has got me thinking back to those days, i remember one of his final matches was vs Leicester live on tv, we had about 6,000 there and we were 3rd in the league !!!!!!!!! I'm pretty sure Fry said in his post match interview what a shame it was we couldn't be people through the turnstiles... obviously the Anti-Jobson move was fully in swing by then, with his (in)famous line "If you don't like how i do things there are another 91 clubs to go and support" It took many people many years to get over those comments... and some i'm sure still haven't returned... but 3rd in the league and 6,000 !!! how times change eh :)

And about 1,000 of those were from Leicester. That was the game when little Derek Payne took a swing at Speedie who went to ground like he'd been hit by a truck. Boring game ended 0-0.

Far be it for me to defend Fry but Jobson could have done more to keep him. He refused to offer him a better contract. John Adams was even prepared to offer Fry £5000 out of his own money. Its quite well known that Jobson and Adams had a punch up over Fry leaving.

Too bad John Adams wasn't the chairman at the time maybe things would have turned out differently.

I think not, I doubt SUFC would still be here today if that jumped up little **** had been given more power!

Love to know if the rumours about Jobson offering O'Neill the Southend job in the aftermath of Fry going were true though!

I think we should give the guy a break; he obviously still has fond memories of his time here and wasn't a rich man by any means when Birmingham offered him pots of money to move. I remember learning how much he was on (basic salary) and realising I was earning more than him.

I've met the bloke quite a few times and he is a classic case of WYSISYG - he loves the game and the players, he tells you things maybe he shouldn't but you usually find out he's telling the truth, and he'll happily mortgage his house to get a club out of trouble with just a vague idea of how things are going to work out in the end.

We ought to remember that he was trying to negotiate his future with Jobson. I wouldn't envy anybody that job.

Well, I don't want to say too much for fear of ruining the story, but you're heading in the right direction here.

I now have 80 minutes of glorious Barry Fry anecdotes to transcribe. This could take some time.
